The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks an Animal Tech to join the team at the Cornell Equine Park. The Animal Technician provides humane care and treatment to horses used in research and teaching. The Cornell Equine Park sits on 165 acres of rolling farmland and serves as an animal housing facility for the College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as other facilities the Equine Park takes care of. We are seeking a horse enthusiast who would assist with the daily care and treatments of 60-80 horses. This person should have a disciplined work ethic, be service minded, and extremely reliable.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Feeding, cleaning, and managing exercise and other daily requirements of horses housed at the facility.

  • Assisting in the daily observation and report health concerns, abnormalities, and behavioral changes to the PI or facility manager.

  • Maintaining accurate health records ensuring compliance with Federal, State and IACUC regulations.

  • Assisting class instructors with demonstrations such as restraint and handling, identification of horses and student instruction. Assist researchers with procedures and special animal handling for various research projects.

  • Providing support in the training and oversight of student and casual employees on all aspects of equine care.

  • Truck horses as needed to meet teaching and research needs.

  • Identify and repair fences and stalls to maintain a safe environment for the horses.

Employees working with animals that are transient or with unknown histories must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma with at least 1 year of experience working in horse management or in an animal care facility or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

  • Training in basic animal care procedures, record keeping, and recognizing health concerns

  • Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail required.

  • Ability to lift more than 50 pounds (handling feed, hay and other bulk supplies).

  • Patience and compassion for animals and their well-being

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree or coursework in Animal Science or related field.

  • Experience in management/horse management in a horse facility, providing horse management instruction in a formal setting, and working with broodmares, foals, and stallions.

  • Knowledge of Federal, State and IACUC regulations.

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.

  • This is a full time position with regular work scheduled for Tuesday - Saturday

  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
