The Animal Facilities Manager position will have the primary role of regulatory compliance in an effort to ensure that facility and animal care requirements are met in the Veterinary Medical Technology program based on the Lee County campus. The Animal Facilities Manager must be available outside of normal college hours (evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays) in case of facility or animal emergencies.

This position may have occasional travel between campuses and for training. Occasional after hours may be required.

Essential Duties

  • Embrace the institutional goals of Central Carolina Community College by engaging students as full partners in the learning process, removing barriers for student progression and supporting and assisting students in achieving their educational goals

  • Maintain regulatory compliance of the animal facilities, and serve as the contact person, for the following agencies:

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

  • Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA)

  • Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)

  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

  • Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

  • North Carolina Radiation Protection (NCRP)

  • North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board (NCVMB)

  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

  • Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW)

  • Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Policy)

  • United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Coordinate all facilities operations and maintenance needs, as they pertain to regulatory compliance

  • Ensure all VMT buildings are within regulation at all times, working with college maintenance and administration as needed

  • Serve as contact person for facility tours, both internal and external

Oversee colony animal care

  • Communicate with students regarding animal care issues and updates

  • Supervise all animal care duty training for all housed species

  • Schedule students for animal care duty rotations for all animals, two students per shift, two shifts per day

  • Develop and supervise student enrichment program for all animals

Supervise kennel assistants

  • Hire, train, and schedule kennel assistants

  • Monitor kennel assistants to ensure that the needs of the colony animals are met according to regulatory guidelines

Manage the inventory of the supplies needed for the animal facilities

  • Ensure appropriate amounts of food (dog, cat, rat, rabbit, horse, cow), cat litter, and cleaning supplies are available

  • Monitor expiration dates and food recalls

  • Conduct annual supply inventory

Monitor Equipment

  • Inspect and perform equipment maintenance within college and equipment warranty guidelines

  • Coordinate all equipment servicing and serve as contact point for servicing companies

  • Supervise equipment ordering and purchasing

Maintain positive public relations image for CougarPets

  • Maintain the CougarPets website and social media accounts

  • Raise visibility within the community for animal adoptions

  • Review and approve or deny adoption applications

  • Coordinate animal adoptions according to USDA regulations

Collaborate with the Clinical Care Coordinator for the following duties:

  • Maintain practice management software and colony animal records

  • Maintain all animal housing areas in compliance with the Animal Care Act

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for the appropriate care of colony animals

  • Ensure colony animal procurement remains in compliance with USDA regulations

  • Maintain relationships with animal shelters and facilities to ensure availability of colony animals

  • Develop and maintain colony animal quarantine and isolation procedures

  • Coordinate colony animal usage within student labs

  • Ensure all colony animals are up-to-date on required vaccines, spays/neuters, and other routine health procedures

Institutional Responsibilities:

  • Engage students in co-curricular career community activities to foster student development and establish a sense of belonging

  • Stay current in your discipline and renew industry credentials, as needed

  • Maintain program and/or college accreditation standards

  • Participate in advisory board meetings as requested

  • Celebrate student achievement at graduation ceremonies and other recognitions

  • Engage in a minimum of 5 hours of professional development each year

  • Attend departmental, divisional, and collegewide meetings

  • Assume other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Required Educational Background:

  • Associate degree or higher in an animal science discipline, or a minimum of five years' experience working in the animal care industry
