Working under the direction of the Shelter Director, the Animal Control Officer II coordinates all activities of

Animal Control fieldwork, Animal Control Officers, and associated records. The Animal Control Officer II

directly supervises the Animal Control Officers and as needed the activities of a variety of part-time

employees, and volunteers. This position is also responsible for daily animal control fieldwork.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

A. *Coordinates all activities of Animal Control field work and animal control associated

records.

B. *Supervises Animal Control Officers and Animal Control Dispatchers and other shelter staff

and volunteers as needed.

C. *Communicates and coordinates activities between animal control and other shelter staff

and volunteers.

D. *Investigates citizen's complaints according to departmental policies and procedures as

directed.

E. *Responsible for the capture and impoundment of animals.

F. *Coordinates and safeguards the procedures for animal bite quarantines, head removal

and shipping for Rabies testing when necessary.

G. *Responsible for communication and coordination between law enforcement and the

shelter.

H. *Responsible for the care and maintenance of all animal control vehicles and related

equipment.

J. *Maintains valid Driver's License.

K. *Stays current with national trends in animal shelter issues and travels to training as

needed.

L. *Testifies in court regarding investigations conducted.

M. *Takes an "on call" status rotationally and assists the "on call" person when needed.

N. *Maintains a positive image with the public in the course of educating them on responsible

pet ownership.

O. *Enforces City and County ordinances and state laws as required for animal control; issues

citations for violations as required.

P. *Maintains all records of citations, works closely with city attorney in prosecution of court

cases.

Q. *Responsible for the intake and set up of animals brought into the shelter by animal control.

R. *Picks up and removes dead animals as necessary.

S. *Conducts investigations regarding animal control related problems.

T. *Completes required reports and keeps accurate records.

U. *Treat and/or euthanize animals as advised and approved by the Animal Care Manager,

or Director.

V. *Able to perform required end of day procedures, i.e. balance money drawer, secure

building/area.

W. *Coordinates and safeguards the procedures in entering data into the computer system

correctly.

X. Performs other duties as assigned.

related to animal control.

C. Ability to communicate effectively in order to manage staff, work with administrators or

Board members and provide service to the public.

D. Ability to work with generally accepted methods and procedures but must use judgment

to select pertinent guidelines and adapt standard methods.

E. Performs extensive study into new areas of animal control to find methods and programs

that have a significant positive impact on the success of the Animal Shelter's goals.

F. Ability to train and develop policies regarding animal control and animal care of all staff.

G. Maintain initiative to preserve the flow of work.

H. Work under stress and with commitment to deadlines.

I. Sustain interpersonal relationships which encourage openness, candor and trust, both

internally and with the general public.

J. Complete projects and/or reports in accurate and timely manner.

K. Always adhere to the Mission statement of the shelter.

L. Maintain City information in a confidential manner.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Frequent bending and lifting and the ability to lift a minimum of 25lbs.

B. Must be able to capture and restrain animals ranging in weight greater than 100lbs.

C. Contributes to many complex issues concerning departmental goals and objectives. A

considerable portion of the work will entail making rapid analysis and decisions,

communicating with the public and taking action.

D. Independent analysis and plan development is expected without specific instructions from

the Director.

E. Ability to work as a team member.

F. Display professional appearance, warm demeanor and positive attitude.

G. Be a motivated self-starter.

H. Work independently and to be accurate, efficient and organized.

I. Manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

J. Work under pressure with time constraints in a changing environment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS

A. Consistently exposed to animal related hazards while performing the duties of the

position.

B. Frequent daily contact with other staff, volunteers, and the general public to provide

service, carry-out policy, and maintain coordination within the department.

C. This position involves an on-call schedule for 24 hours on a rotating basis.

D. Frequent daily contact with persons internally and externally. These contacts involve nonroutine cooperative problem solving, as well as explanation of policies regarding animal

care and control.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

A. Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Animal Science or related field; or experience as

an Animal Control Officer, Police Officer; OR at least two years of experience at an

Animal Control agency or similar organization; or related profession.

B. Must maintain a valid state issued Driver's license.

C. Specialized knowledge of the principles and objectives of animal control and of law

enforcement activities.

D. May be exposed to extremes in weather conditions.

E. Consistently exposed to animal related hazards when handling animals while assisting

staff or the public.

F. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written form.

G. A pleasant, friendly, and outgoing demeanor.

H. Willingness to take on additional tasks as assigned.
