Animal Control Officer: Enforces all laws and regulations related to animals; performs intake of strays and owner-surrendered animals; assists with the rehabilitation and adoption of animals from the Shelter;performs tasks relating to the operation and maintenance of the Animal Shelter; cooperatively works with other staff and volunteers.
Examples of Duties
Enforces ordinances and statutes related to the control of domestic and wild animals.
Responds, investigates, and resolves complaintsrelated to the treatment and disposition of animals.
Deals with animals that are found to be unlicensed, stray, ill, injured, neglected, or pose a threat to citizens; medicates animals as directed.
Checks homes in question for various animal violations including lack of food, water, shelter, and assesses outside temperatures relating to cruelty to animal regulations.
Transports animals for emergency medical care.
Appears in court as necessary to present evidence.
Develops, distributes, and presents public education materials to citizens.
Develops, distributes, and files reports.
Cleans and disinfects animal kennels/cages, including removal of bodily fluids and fecal matter; performs custodial duties to maintain the general cleanliness of the facility, to include sweeping and mopping floors, and cleaning restrooms.
Feeds, cleans, provides water and is responsible for the general care of animals in conjunction with the Code of Virginia; completesreports and records by maintaining documents in accordance with state and local laws, documenting any problems that occur; maintains a variety of files and records.
Other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
High School diploma or equivalent and 3 to less than 5 years directly related experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience;
Experience in animal control work or similar work involving contact with animals desireable.
Valid Virginia driver's license.
Must successfully complete a pre-employment medical physical and criminal background check.
Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends and holidays.
Must possess or be able to successfully complete state mandated training and any specialized in-house training.
Abilityto work in varying weather conditions and walk, run, climb, crawl, bend, pull, push, or lift and balance over less than ideal terrain.
Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and firmly when in contact with animal owners and the general public.
Ability to read and interpret federal, state and local laws and City ordinances, correspondence, various reports, contracts, articles and manuals; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; prepare reports and judicial documents using a personal computer and a variety of software; to establish and maintain strong internal and external customer service and be highly professional.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting of objects weighing in excess of 74 pounds, moving in areas of difficult or dangerous access.
The work environment involves extremely high risks with exposure to potentially life threatening situations or unusual environmental stress which requires a full range of safety and other precautions, but in some cases, these precautions cannot prevent injury, illness, or possibly death.
