This classification is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations and/or the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act. As a safety-sensitive classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana certification will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Animal Welfare Supervisor, the incumbent performs duties related to impounding/containing/reclaiming, adoptions, and euthanization of animals. Also performs maintenance at the shelter as needed. Work varies, may require interpretive judgment within well established guidelines, procedures and standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Complies with established safety policies and procedures.
  • Physical requirements include but are not limited to bending, twisting, reaching, climbing, crawling, walking, and lifting up to 75lbs (greater with assistance).
  • Work is generally outdoors in all weather conditions and is exposed to unpredictable/uncontrollable physical conditions of heat, cold, rain, and uneven surfaces.
  • Routinely assigned to perform cleaning/feeding duties at the shelter.
  • Receives complaints related to stray/nuisance/sick/injured/vicious animals through communications by telephone, two-way radio or in person.
  • Operates city vehicle on a regular basis, and is responsible for maintaining the vehicle, including oil changes, regular maintenance, and keeping the vehicle clean, organized, disinfected, and washed.
  • Captures/Contains animals by hand, catch pole, snare, or tranquilizer gun.
  • Fill out impound cards for each animal impounded.
  • Scans all animals for microchips, and attempts to locate an owner, if no owner can be located, animals are taken to the shelter for disposition or disposal.
  • Compiles and maintains various reports including daily logs of calls received and action taken, and incident reports when necessary.
  • Performs inspections regarding laws and requirements of animal ordinances as required.
  • Responsible for disseminating and explaining animal welfare ordinances to the public.
  • Issues citations and may be required to appear in court regarding animal ordinances.
  • Routinely assigned to mow, weed-eat, and maintain the grounds at the shelter.
  • Patrols city streets to look for stray, injured, or deceased animals.
  • Euthanizes animals in order to exterminate sick, injured, or stray animals as directed.
  • Performs any other related duties as required or assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous animal experience preferred but not required.
  • Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver's license and maintain a status of insurability.
  • Must complete State Certification for Animal Welfare Officer within one year of employment and maintain such certification while employed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • The nature of the work is varied involving impounding/containing stray/nuisance animals and handling complaints requiring independent judgement in handling animals and dealing with the public. Skills may be acquired after assuming a position. This position requires weekend and holiday work in an on-call rotation between the Officers.
  • Officers are permitted to display approved tattoos while working in an official capacity or representing the department while in uniform. Tattoos that are not permitted include those that exhibit or advocate discrimination against sex, race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, age, physical or mental disability, medical condition or marital status; those that exhibit sexual or profane words/phrases, indecency, images that depict or promote drug use, gang symbols, unlawful behavior, sexually explicit acts or other obscene material, or any language or depiction that may impair or disrupt the operations of the department. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, neck or hands while in uniform.
  • No hoop or gauge earrings are permitted due to safety reasons.
