The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP)provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services foranimal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the FrederickNational Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission byproviding a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services thatare focused on the design, generation, characterization and application ofgenetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which areaimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASPcontributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improvingexisting treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe andhumane treatment of animals.


The Animal Caretaker II will be responsiblefor:

  • Feeding and housing laboratory animals

  • General laboratory animal housekeeping

  • Cage changing and sanitation

  • Cleaning tasks associated with the upkeep of aresearch animal facility

  • Ordering and stocking supplies

  • Keeping simple records

  • Utilizing computer skills for email, training,and basic data entry

  • Operate automatic washing and cleaningequipment

  • Collecting hair, fecal and blood samples fordiagnostic testing

  • Rotating holidays and weekends

  • Work may involve the use of potentiallyhazardous material, including biological and chemical carcinogen orradiological materials or may be located in areas where such materials areused, require the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strictsafety protocol.



To be considered forthis position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilitieslisted below:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • One (1) year of job-related animal careexperience and ALAT certification or two (2) years laboratory animal careexperience with high school diploma

  • Ability to handle a variety of laboratoryanimals

  • Ability to keep simple records

  • Ability to operate automatic washing andcleaning equipment

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and wearrespiratory protective equipment if necessary

  • Knowledge of routine tasks associated withgeneral laboratory animal care

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a securityclearance

In this role you will: * Serve as the technical interface between non-clinical stakeholders to establish study designs and achieve regulatory quality standards * Preform in a leadership role, problem solving technical issues related to non-clinical studies and communicating solutions and emerging risks * Work with Integrated Product Teams and product development teams, comprised of civilians, military and non-government personnel, with diverse areas of expertise, including scientists, statisticians, biologists, toxicologists, clinicians, pharmacologists, formulation scientist, program managers, budget analysts, regulatory specialists, acquisition analyst and logisticians. * Represent the organization, communicating with individuals to include contractors, customers, the public, government agencies and external sources. * Derive interpretation from data and, with minimal oversight, design subsequent experiments in support of non-clinical testing of vaccines under the animal rule. * Review all aspects of testing and data analysis in order to generate detailed and well-documented recommendations to provide as guidance for a path forward. * Asess the technical maturity of immunological assays as it relates to bridging animal and human clinical data * Preform data-level technical and quality reviews of non-clinical results to ensure technical and scientific data integrity and adherence to compliance with regulatory standards. * Consult on the design of experimental studies and protocols, interpretation of experimental results, review of study reports, and recommendations from other performers. * Translate or explain what information means and how it can be used * Generate and interpret and communicate results from pre-clinical/non-clinical studies to teams of Biochemist, biologists, pharmacologists, program managers and non-scientist * Review implementation of activities to ensure they are in compliance with good laboratory practices, standard operating procedures, protocols and regulations related to ethics and animal welfare. * Ensure experimental data are being properly collected * Document deviations to protocol and participate in audits. * Grow your technical knowledge and skills * Knowledge of FDA regulatory processes * Understanding and oversight of animal studies (pre-clinical) to inform product development * Knowledge of regulated animal studies under the FDA Animal Rule to inform regulated submissions to the FDA * Knowledge of trial design such as non-clinical safety studies to support various stages of clinical development * Master's Degree and 14 years experience, 10 of which must be relevant.
