Job Summary

Cares for the animals used in research and development studies. Performs duties related to the maintenance of experimental animals such as feeding and caring for animals, cleaning cages, holding animals for treatment by laboratory technician or maintaining inventory and animal identification records.

Performs cleaning/sanitation of animal facility and equipment. Responsible for bio-safety and bio-security of the animals. May partner with pre-clinical investigators to assist and support veterinarians with surgery, dosing, post-op care and monitoring of animal studies.

The following are responsibilities relate to the Animal Care Technician III:

Responsible for assisting in the training of animal care staff in the following; cage changing, microisolator cage changing techniques, room sanitation, autoclave operation, cagewash operations, waste disposal and other husbandry duties as required.

Coordinate and assist in ensuring that adequate supplies are in the barrier, animal holding rooms and other areas as specified.

Provide support in animal rooms changing cages and works in the cage wash operation.

Ensure proper maintenance of animal records including, room logs, health reports, cage card labels, autoclave records, cagewash records, animal census and other records as required.

Ensure that all animal rooms are observed on a daily basis to monitor for sick, impaired or dead animals, and reports findings to the veterinary staff or alternatively to the Animal Facility Manager.

Perform basic technical procedures: handling and restraint, animal weights, injections (SQ, and IP), and blood collection.

Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's Degree preferred, High school diploma, General Education Degree (G.E.D.) or equivalent required.

Experience: Two to four years husbandry experience in a laboratory animal facility.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Certification/Licensure: AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) or higher or ability to successfully achieve ALAT certification within one (1) year of hire/promotion required.

For this position, the successful candidate will oversee the build out of the Generation Bio ACF, hire/manage support staff, and perform study activities as needed to enable execution of in vivo studies to advance both our gene therapy platform and our pipeline of development candidates.</p> <p><strong>RESPONSIBILITIES:<br> </strong></p> <ul> <li>Oversee the build out of a new ACF in close collaboration with Facilities </li> <li>Create and build ACF program, obtain all appropriate permitting and establish IACUC</li> <li>Manage/coordinate IACUC in collaboration with IACUC chair, including screening of protocols, overseeing correspondence related to committee reviews, drafting institutional policies, and other related IACUC responsibilities </li> <li>Interface with City of Cambridge Lab Animal Commissioner regarding annual inspections and Generation Bio Animal Program</li> <li>Partner with EH&amp;S Department to ensure general lab safety and compliance with all local, state and federal regulations</li> <li>Hire/manage animal facility staff including overseeing daily operations and scheduling</li> <li>Work closely with vendors to purchase equipment and coordinate animal purchases, imports/exports, and space and resource allocation</li> <li>Interface with consulting veterinarian and provide oversight for the quarantine and animal health monitoring program</li> <li>Develop, write, and maintain animal care and technical Standard Operating Procedures</li> <li>Provide oversight and schedule daily study technical work and implement post-approval compliance monitoring program to ensure adherence to animal protocols</li> <li>Provide animal husbandry, handling and restraint, injection, sample collection, euthanasia and anesthesia training and support to animal users</li> <li>Collaborate closely with ACF users within pre-clinical group to enable in vivo studies.
