Class Concept

Entry level class in animal care control occupation under close supervision requiring some knowledge of custodial care applicable to animals in order to care for sheltered animals.

Job Duties

Provides care for sheltered animals (e.g., feeds, waters, cleans and exercises animals), and cleans and disinfects cages, floors and related kennel areas in accordance with established practices, selects animals for adoption, assists veterinarians with examinations, administers vaccines and medications to animals as required.

Performs euthanasia of injured, sick and unadoptable animals by established approved methods. Prepares carcasses for disposal, and disposes of animal remains according to state health regulations and established practices.

Escorts individuals through kennels to identify lost dogs, conducts pre-adoption interviews to ensure responsible placements, provides information to individuals (e.g., prices, conditions of adoption and effective care, state and local laws, animal behavior management, pet selection).

Enters and retrieves information on computer (e.g., animal records), assists in general office operations (e.g., answers phones, provides information to public regarding licensing and dog control requirements), and operates portable two way radio and uses various equipment to locate information (e.g., microfiche, computer terminal).

Minimum Class Requirements

Completion of high school diploma; ability to read and write common vocabulary. Must have valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. -OR alternative, equivalent evidence of the Minimum Class Requirements.

Training & Development

Must obtain Euthanasia Technician certification within 6 months of hire date. Must maintain CET certification.

Job Duties Patrols assigned area of the County, seizes and impounds all dogs not confined or under their owners reasonable control; conducts periodic checks for valid dog licenses, issues citations and required licenses to persons found in violation of relevant laws concerning control and registration of dogs. Responds to calls regarding strays, hostile dogs, injured or sick animals; takes required actions to impound, save, or humanely destroy animals as appropriate to circumstances involved; sets live traps to capture problem dogs, investigates claims regarding livestock killed by dogs. Completes forms and prepares reports of actions taken for purposes of documentation, legal requirements, statistical records, or as dictated by policy. Appears in court when necessary to give testimony in the prosecution of cases involving animal control. As shift assignment dictates, receives animals, performs dispatching, uses computer terminal for record searches; answers questions from public regarding legal requirements, dog control and effective methods of pet care. Cleans and provides routine care of equipment and vehicles used to perform duties. Assists in the cleaning of kennels and related measures as time allows. (Performs Related Duties As Required) Minimum Class Requirements Equivalent to high school diploma/GED and six months experience caring for or handling animals and working with the public; Must have valid Ohio driver's license with acceptable driving record.
