Animal Care Attendant

Performs semiskilled work supporting the daily operations of the animal shelter through cleaning, feeding, and providing animal enrichment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Animal Services Shelter Manager.

• Cleans and disinfects kennel areas, cat cages, food bowls, and water bowls.

• Cleans the animal shelter, to include: sweeping, mopping, cleaning windows, yard cleanup, and bathroom cleaning.

• Launders of bedding, toys, and supplies.

• Feeds shelter animals and maintains fresh water supply.

• Provides animal enrichment services such as walking dogs and playing with the animals.

• Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteered.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of the laws governing the keeping and caring of domestic animals, as set forth in the NC General Statutes and County Animal Control Ordinances. Knowledge of animal health and safety procedures. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and general public.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting, frequently requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (nonweather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).High school diploma or GED and moderate experience caring for animals, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be able to obtain Certified Rabies Vaccinator certification within 12 months of employment.

Valid driver's license.
