Overview of the Job:

This critical role is responsible for providing excellent quality of life and humane care for all animals in the shelter. Duties include, but are not limited to, cleaning, feeding, and monitoring the animal's health and behavior. The role may at times assist with adoptions and helping customers with any lost and found animals. This role is an ambassador for promoting and supporting the LA/SPCA's programs and mission, including educating customers on responsible pet ownership.

Success Criteria & Essential

  • Caring and compassionate about animals, this role will provide all the care and attention for our shelter animals. This includes administering vaccinations and performing heartworm testing as and when required;

  • A calming and nurturing nature is essential as the animal care attendant will humanely handle severely injured, sick and abused/neglected animals. This may involve working with animals that are aggressive, fearful or excitable. There are occasions where the role also will work with wildlife and livestock;

  • Professionalism is required at all times, as the role will assist with euthanasia and will perform euthanasia once certified. This includes handling deceased animals and preparing for their cremation;

  • Responsible for the general cleaning and upkeep of interior and exterior shelter rooms and animal areas, this role involves a lot of physical and strenuous activity and endurance;

  • Excellent customer service skills are required as the role interacts with customers, employees and volunteers on a daily basis. This role will promote responsible pet care including LA/SPCA programs such as spaying and neutering;

  • Easy going and strives to work as a team to accomplish daily goals and on-going projects;

  • This role is regarded as "Essential" in extreme weather and emergency conditions. This means that the position will report for duty in such circumstances and work extra hours as required;

  • Respectful of privacy, confidentiality of animal records will be maintained at all times;


  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D;

Minimum skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and pre-employment substance screening.

  • Team-focused and willing to work and learn different parts of the organization.

  • Must demonstrate excellent communication skills including verbal and listening.

  • Customer service and working with the public is preferred.

  • Ability to report to work as early as 6:00am and end as late as 6:00pm.

  • Will work weekends and holidays.

  • A driver's license is preferred;

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work with industrial strength cleaners and disinfectants.

  • Should not be allergic to animals or nut products; must be able to work around all animals

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds; push and pull heavy objects; bend, twist, reach; perform strenuous physical activities including frequent walking and running, standing, bending and stooping.

Working Conditions:

  • Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches.

  • Works in an area with a high noise levels.

  • Works both indoors and outdoors.
