One of the most special places at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is Angels Rest a beautiful and uplifting final resting place for beloved pets. If you have ever been there, you'll know it's a place of profound joy rather than sorrow, with wind chimes shimmering in the breeze and beautiful red rock canyons cradling the memories of loved pets. It's a special place that needs a special caretaker. And we're looking for someone to fill that role. You'll not only be looking after these beautiful grounds and placing departed animals in their final resting spots, but also, you'll be there for people as they say goodbye to their beloved furry family members. You'll participate in a monthly blessing of the animals who have passed. And you'll welcome visitors who want to visit a placed animal, or who just want to see what makes these grounds so special. It's a unique role for someone who loves animals, and who knows how it feels to grieve for one. Some physical strength and maintenance know-how is important, along with being a natural at treating people with empathy and respect, and having a deep love for the animals who find peace here.

This is a full-time seasonal position, with the season running from March through October

Position Summary:

The Angels Rest Caretaker has the very special responsibility of placing Sanctuary and Best Friends animals who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. This person also participates in the monthly Blessings for Sanctuary animals who have passed. This requires a keen sensitivity to the grief of those who have lost a loved one. This person must be emotionally supportive to caregivers and members and conduct all services with reverence and respect. Additionally, this position provides regular maintenance of the grounds of Angels Rest and Angels Overlook.

The Caretaker must be comfortable interacting with Sanctuary visitors and volunteers, directing members to specific site locations and occasionally leading a tour group. This important front facing opportunity means that this position requires a commitment to the mission and goals of Best Friends Animal Society.

Responsibilities:

  • Placements and services in Angels Rest and Angels Overlook for animals and cremains from the Sanctuary and Best Friends members.

  • Cemetery site preparation for the placement of animals and cremains.

  • Regular maintenance of the grounds including sweeping, weeding, picking up trash, picking up fallen wind chimes, repairing broken wind chimes, pruning bushes and trees, planting bushes and straightening markers.

  • Placement and maintenance of memorials including wind chimes, dedication plaques and granite stones and other personal memorials.

  • Participate in the monthly Blessing service for Sanctuary animals who have passed.

  • Engrave memorials using an engraving machine.

  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment.

  • Keep the tool shed in order and request necessary supplies, grave markers and pavers.

  • Meet and greet visitors at Angels Rest and Angels Overlook and assist them in locating specific animal sites as needed.

  • Work with volunteers on service projects for upkeep of the cemetery grounds.

  • Conduct special Blessings for VIP group visits.

  • Lead special tour for VIP group visits.

  • Update map sites to ensure they're current.

  • Accompany workshop attendee tours of Angels Rest and answer any questions.

  • Follow safe work practices and observe safety precautions.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a respectful attitude and be emotionally supportive to Best Friends caregivers and the public.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Able to meet, greet and assist visitors and volunteers.

  • Should have a basic knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, materials and practices used in construction and maintenance.

  • Must be able to make sound judgments in sensitive situations.

  • Must have basic computer skills, including email and Google docs.

  • Able to work independently and follow through on projects without direct supervision.

  • Must have a valid driver's license with three years clean driving record.

  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to share the lifting of 100 pounds.

  • Work is primarily outdoors so must be able to work in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to 100 degrees.

  • Physically able to perform strenuous manual labor.

  • Ability to sustain prolonged periods of standing, stooping, reaching and climbing.

  • Manual dexterity, coordination, agility, strength and stamina is important.

Our cottages, cabins and RV Park are on the Sanctuary property, where some 3,100 of our visitors and volunteers choose to stay during their visit to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Visitors who stay on Best Friends property are able to have a unique experience being in Angel Canyon. Those working in Housekeeping play an integral part in creating and maintaining that experience by presenting units and public areas in pristine condition. The Housekeeping personnel are often times the link to the guest and our accommodations, working to ensure that all details of presentation of their units are completed to their satisfaction. This person possesses exceptional customer service skills and understands Best Friends' culture of kindness as it relates to our accommodations. Staying onsite is a great opportunity, which enhances the overall experience for our visitors and the support they bring to the overall mission of Best Friends. Housekeeping personnel clean an average of 125 units per month. In addition to this, personnel clean about 60 offices, 85 personal bathrooms and 188 public areas on a regular monthly basis. A person in this position will be expected to perform routine manual tasks to maintain cleanliness, sanitary conditions and appearance inside and outside of the areas under their purview. Responsibilities include but not limited to: * Participating in all housekeeping-related tasks at any given time including clean and service assigned areas to include, but not limited to, sweeping, mopping, and washing windows and walls, dusting, vacuuming, doing laundry, trash removal, and scrubbing various buildings on a regular schedule. * Keeping public areas, private restrooms and units stocked with toiletries and supplies, and report maintenance needs. Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies, paper products, and other provisions. * Performing routine light maintenance and repair, such as changing light bulbs, tightening toilet seats, cleaning up after vermin, shoveling snow and placing cinders, TV/cable troubleshooting, plunging toilets, touch up painting, window screens and blind repairs, replacing compact fridges, microwaves and coffee makers and pulling weeds around units. * Cleaning up after emergencies, such as overflowing toilet, broken dishes andanimal accidents on floors and furniture. * Interacting with our guests, answering questions and assisting guests with their needs. Being sensitive to any comments by guests for necessary improvements and reporting those * Responding to special requests from guests, such as fresh towels, sheets, light cleaning, early check-ins or late check-outs. * Assisting guests with unusual needs, i.e. jumping a dead battery, pushing a vehicle out of the mud or snow. * Maintaining laundry so items are always available in the storeroom, Welcome Center, Village kitchen, Eckhoffs, Maia's and Big Lake Guest and Meeting House. * Bringing any issues immediately to Team Lead Visitor Experience Manager's attention. * Keeping abreast of BFAS current news by checking personal email daily.
