Oversees the technical operation of the Anesthesia Technician service, including hiring, training and the direct supervision of the Anesthesia Technicians. Assures the quality of service and monitoring for patients undergoing anesthesia in all anesthetizing locations throughout the hospital.

Maintains, services, sets up, tests, and troubleshoots equipment. Also provides technical assistance to the Anesthesia staff in the care of patients based on the hospital's scope of practice and hospital policies, as determined by the responsible Medical Director.

1.Direct management of the three day and evening shift Lead Anesthesia Technicians with overall responsibility for 24 FTE's. Fosters a collaborative and proactive team focused on delivering the highest level of customer service 24/7/365 which ensures all departmental needs are met.
2.Interviews, oversees orientation, appraises performance and disciplines personnel. Directs the activities of staff and assigns weekly schedules, including daily work assignments, overtime, holiday, vacation, and sick time.
3.Establishes achievable benchmarks and goals for the department, builds team's commitment to objectives and promotes sense of urgency within the team for reaching goals. Holds regular staff meetings and ensures timely and accurate communication of information.
4.Ensures appropriate technical coverage for all anesthetizing locations in the hospital. Prioritizes coverage as necessary and assigns priorities according to professional staff needs and workload.
5.Responsible for the development of training and continuing education programs for Anesthesia Technicians. This is done in conjunction with clinical leadership in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. Prepares and ensures applicable competencies are met and documented.
6.Acts as a liaison to clinical support departments to ensure that all Anesthesia clinical needs are met in the most efficient and effective manner to promote patient safety.
7.Coordinates with OR Materials Management on the introduction and evaluation of new products and assists in coordination of evaluation of new technology. Maintains adequate par levels of supplies.
8.In conjunction with Anesthesia Clinical leadership, prepares departmental procedural protocols. Ensures that protocols are followed by the technical staff and are in line with the needs of the professional staff and other hospital and Infection Control policies.
9.Responds to and assists with all non-emergent and emergent needs/resuscitation efforts within the department and throughout the hospital as appropriate.
10. Understands sterile technique and prepares sterile setup of anesthesia related materials and equipment. Maintains integrity of the anesthesia sterile field and recognizes and reports any breaks in technique to the anesthetist.
11. Assists the anesthesia staff in the set up and initialization of hemodynamic monitoring equipment (e.g. EKG, non-invasive blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, and arterial pressure, CVP, pulmonary artery transducers)
12. Assists anesthesiologists in care of patients before, during, and immediately after anesthesia which involves the following: Transfer of patients from stretchers to operating table; Attachment of vital signs and monitoring equipment; Positioning and hold patients for procedures, i.e. spinal, epidurals; Assist in endotracheal intubations by preparing and holding equipment; Assist in transfer from Operating Room to the PACU.
13. Conducts performance tests, performs calibration and first level repairs (i.e. battery changes, cable swapping, monitor checks) of anesthesia equipment.
14. Prepares blood pressure transducers. Calibrates them to the appropriate machine. Sets up IV solutions and IV infusions. Collects blood or samples off invasive catheters for analysis.
15. Assembles and primes Belmont rapid infuser with crystalloid at request of anesthetist.
16. Sets up equipment for use in the work area such as, but not limited to, connecting input and output hoses, bronchoscopes, and assembling breathing circuits. Delivers required anesthesia equipment as needed.
17. Responsible for proper control of records and inventories. Troubleshoots and coordinates equipment repairs. Maintains knowledge of vendor product upgrades.
18. Assist the Bio Med Engineering group with various projects, including machine modification and data accumulation.
19. Assumes other related duties as needed.
20. Actively engages in perioperative projects aimed at providing safe and efficient care of patients and works to improve job efficiency amongst the anesthesia technicians.


Associates degree in Science or equivalent in education. In lieu of formal education, minimum of five years' experience with equipment calibration, first level repairs, and testing and troubleshooting of anesthesia equipment may be considered.

Preference for ASATT certified Anesthesia Technician/Technologist with well-rounded technical and operations experience.

Prior leadership and team building experience required (within an Operating Room setting is preferred).

Prior Supervisory experience preferred.

BCLS preferred, but training will be provided. Successful completion within the first 90 days of employment required.


Ability to delegate responsibility. Ability to establish priorities for job responsibilities.

Ability to follow detailed instructions.

Knowledge of physical and mathematical principles.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Good manual dexterity and ability to use common hand tools. Excellent visual acuity.

Ability to think quickly and use sound judgment. High initiative, self-starter, and team-oriented focus.

Ability to work independently and with personnel from multiple departments, at all levels, to resolve business issues.

Ability to work well under extreme pressure and stress.

Ability to remain on feet up to 80% of work time, lift and carry loads weighing up to 25 pounds, and push rolling equipment weighing several hundred pounds.

Ability to work in a hospital environment and deal closely and effectively with a variety of professional staff (physicians and nurses) up to 100% of work time. Experience with working in an OR environment 100% of work time, including knowledge of appropriate conduct in an OR and familiarity with aseptic techniques.


High stress working conditions due to the OR environment which may include the following: tight schedules, emergency surgery, and the critical nature of care required. Exposure to blood and secretions on contaminated equipment.

Exposure to used hypodermic and spinal needles. Exposure to patients with undiagnosed disease. Exposure to narcotics and other addictive drugs.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Responsible for the administration of the department in absence of the Director and Senior Manager. * Manages labor & material resources effectively to deliver high-quality services and support within the framework of available resources. Accountable for budget performance in area of responsibility; reviews budget performance monthly, implementing necessary corrections to ensure on-budget performance. * Manages human resource functions including, in part: recruiting, hiring, orienting, evaluating, counseling and disciplining up to 4 Supervisors and 175 staff. Manages employee worktime and employment data through Kronos/MSS payroll/data system. Functions as liaison between subordinate supervisors and the Human Resources Department. Counsels supervisors regarding employee relations issues, policies and strategies. * Supports department and division management goals, encouraging a positive work environment that supports high productivity and job satisfaction. Provides & documents timely performance feedback to subordinates to identify improvement opportunities and/or recognize/reinforce superlative job performance. * Tours areas of responsibility several times daily to ensure that standards of cleaning and targeted performance standards are met. Reviews patient feedback data monthly and quarterly trends, developing recommendations and working with department leadership to identify goals & implement service enhancement interventions. * Assesses the work environment, products/equipment, and processes to develop and maintain a safe work environment. Ensures timely completion of documentation relating to workplace safety and employee accidents. Leads the ESD Operational Safety and Health Committee. * Assists the Director and Senior Manager with the direction and implementation of the department's in-service training programs, facilitating and documenting on-the-job training and supporting staff development. * Monitors finishes and appearance of the physical facility and facilitates corrections as appropriate (painting, repairs, furnishings, finishes, etc). * Performs other similar or related duties as assigned or necessary. High school diploma required; associate or bachelor degree preferred. Additionally, a minimum of 3 years of progressively more responsible experience. SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Customer service orientation: Proactive relationship development to facilitate negotiated solutions with staff/ customers in sometimes-stressful situations.
