Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is a 122-bed, general acute care community hospital located in Torrington, Connecticut, that serves as a regional health care resource for the 100,000 residents of Litchfield County and Northwest Connecticut. POSITION SUMMARY/PURPOSE

Performs a variety of duties for the Anesthesia Dept. to maintain and make available supplies and equipment for the day-to-day function of the anesthesia staff. Interacts and works with the several hospital departments, including Nursing, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Management, Purchasing, Central Sterile and Pharmacy.

Under the direction of the Clinical Manager of Surgical Services, the Anesthesia Technician is responsible for the day-to-day management of the supplies. Cleaning the work areas, helping facilitate the Anesthesia work load.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.Performs Quality Control Functions.

a. Sets up all anesthesia carts with supplies and equipment in an accurate and timely manner.

b. Disinfects anesthesia equipment according to established procedures in a timely manner

c. Maintains an inventory of non-disposable supplies, sterile disposable and clean items to ensure par levels are kept at all times.

d. Restocks carts daily and workrooms twice a week (supplies & medications) in OR, OB, and AMU

e. Delivers appropriate materials and specialized equipment to operating rooms as requested.

f. Restocks and cleans anesthesia cabinets, supply carts and epidural/spinal carts in all anesthetizing locations daily (OR, OB, AMU).

g. Ensures obstetrics department is adequately restocked by retrieving necessary supplies.

h. All carts and machines are cleaned daily.

2.Processes instrumentation correctly.

a. Ensures that the proper equipment and materials are available in all anesthetizing locations.

b. Inventory is current and rotated.

c. Notifies Clinical Manager, Surgical Services, Anesthesia Dept., and Materials Management of obsolete inventory.

3.Coordinates orders through purchasing department.

  • Arranges delivery of supplies.

  • Receives vendors via Purchasing.

4.Assists Anesthesiologists/CRNAs with patient care.

a. Assists with patient transfers to and from the OR table.

b. Assists with monitor placement, induction and intubation of patients.

c. Assists with special procedures, including blocks and epidurals.

d. Assists with patient transport.

5.Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job‑related hazards.

a. Attends all required safety education programs.

b. Provides complete and accurate responses to safety questions.

c. Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.

d. Maintains work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards.

e. Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.

f. If manager/leader, provides for the safety of department employees.

6.Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

a. Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.

b. Ensures a safe environment by instituting appropriate control measures.

c. Attends annual education programs.

7.Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

a. Interacts with all of the above in a considerate, helpful, and courteous manner, as observed by the manager and peers.

b. Fosters mature professional relationships with fellow employees in a courteous, friendly manner, as measured by management observation and peer input.

c. Maintains professional composure and confidence during stressful situations.

d. Maintains open communication using appropriate chain of command regarding issues.

e. Conducts all work activities with respect for rights and wishes of patients, visitors, families, and fellow employees.

f. Maintains confidentiality of all Hospital and patient information at all times, as observed by peers and management.

g. Presents neat appearance in proper attire and identification, as required by the position, department, and hospital policy.

h. Continuously displays a "can do" attitude within the department and across departmental lines to contribute to the overall customer service program in place.

8.Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.

a. Willingly offers assistance to others when requested, as observed by the manager.

b. Attends 75% of meetings, as assigned by the department manager.

c. Participates in staff meetings, as determined by the manager.

d. Supports the hospital's mission, policies, and procedures through attendance and participation at committee meetings, if applicable.

e. Utilizes automated system to communicate inter- and intradepartmentally, as appropriate.

f. Completes work assignments on time/readily accepts assignments, as observed by the manager.

g. Reports to work on time, as observed by the manager.

h. Is at work as scheduled, as observed by the manager.

9.Efficient use of work time to accomplish assignments, as well as the ability to accept or respond to change in the work environment in a way that promotes the organization's goals and objectives.

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILL REQUIREMENTS, AND DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

Internal and external contact with all necessary parties. Handles multiple priorities, independent discretion/decision making, manages stress appropriately, works alone effectively, works in close proximity to others and/or in a distracting environment, works with others effectively.

Attends all mandatory education programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety and regulatory compliance. Attends all required department-specific education and training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to department safety and specific job‑related hazards. Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

Attire is professional, neat, clean, and appropriate for the work environment. Wears proper identification while on duty. Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times, as observed by peers and management.

Reports to work on time and meets acceptable standard for attendance. Attends a minimum of two staff meetings, reads minutes for all staff meetings, and participates in committees as required. Appropriate Pharmacy Certification for role as determined by the Director of Pharmacy. CPR Certification required.

EDUCATION

Equivalent to high school education preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Prior experience of anesthesia equipment preferred. Previous experience with materials management and/or purchasing preferred.

Directed to ensure the smooth operation of the Anesthesia Dept. Room. Exhibits a high level of time management skills and flexibility in performing daily activities. Meets performance expectation for Customer Service, Teamwork, Resource Utilization and Staff and Self Development as outlined in the performance. One year experience in Anesthesia or related work experience preferred.
