PPG Aerospace Transparencies produces and markets over 1400 different glass, plastic, and composite transparency designs, as well as a variety of components and related products in three different manufacturing facilities. Commercial, Military, General Aviation and Specialty Armored products are sold to Aircraft OEMs, airline Operators, and end users throughout the world.

The Materials, Process and Coating Technology Group, part of PPG Aerospace Transparencies Engineering R&T, provides technical direction and specifications for developing new products and materials while providing analytical and materials-related production support to the Huntsville facility and throughout the SBU. Additionally, it provides input to the development of new process technology, materials development, improvements to existing products and process technologies and for both internal and external entities.


  • Lead or assist in the selection, testing, implementation, and technical support of new materials within production and laboratory environments

  • Provide technical, troubleshooting, obsolescence, and requalification support for existing materials and their related processes

  • Give technical expertise related to materials used in the manufacturing process

  • Operate and oversee projects within a laboratory environment, including: routine analysis; method development; routine maintenance; materials formulation; production support;

  • Oversee laboratory equipment maintenance and compliance with DCMA, Quality and corporate standards.

  • Develop and Drive Local and Cross-site laboratory equipment training protocols

  • Perform in-depth investigations into materials-related production or field issues

  • Assist quality department in maintaining compliance with all quality policies, including: shelf life; audits; documentation; corrective actions

  • Interact with operations personnel and outside vendors to maintain Laboratory equipment operation

  • Maintain proper documentation, for work records, processes, formulations and procedures

  • Provide clear and effective technical communication to the facility, the SBU, and customers

  • Support and actively engage in Lean and 5S culture and initiatives within the facility and SBU

  • Prioritize Safety


  • B.S. degree, Chemistry (M.S. or Ph.D. Analytical Chemistry preferred)

  • 4 years' experience working in a Non-Academic Analytical laboratory environment

  • Must have significant experience with GC-MS, LC, IC, & ICP-MS instrumentation

  • Experience operating and maintaining Complex Analytical instrumentation

  • Experience developing Analytical test methods & SOPs

  • Experience with inorganic and organic materials analysis

  • Good interpersonal and communication abilities

  • Ability to work independently and with a team

  • Willingness to work in a dynamic production/manufacturing environment

  • Strong technical writing skills

  • Ability to work in the U.S without sponsorship.

This person is responsible for performing analysis on Tungsten, Tungsten Carbide and Molybdenum products using a variety of testing equipment and instrumentation. This individual maintains the integrity of testing methods for finished, in process and raw materials, as well as, maintaining the testing results for the environmental concern of the facility. Duties and Responsibilities: * Responsible for procedure development as assigned by the Quality Manager. * Evaluates all types of test data as required, makes decisions for re-testing and evaluates unexpected or questionable data. * Responsible for incorporating new instrumentation or instrument upgrades as assigned by Quality Manager. Develops, tests, and documents testing methods for instrument up-grades/new instrumentation. Trains lab personnel on new instrument operations. * Assures proper care of instrumentation. Monitors instrument maintenance, responsible for instrument repair and preventative maintenance. * Is responsible for revising departmental ISO documentation as assigned by the Quality Manager. * Completes internal quality audits as assigned by the Quality Manager. * May serve as a team leader or facilitator for process improvement, cost reduction and lean manufacturing programs. * Perform other related duties as assigned Contacts: * All levels of Management * Manufacturing Personnel * Quality Personnel Equipment Used: A wide variety of testing equipment and instrumentation including: * Analytical balances * Microscope imaging systems, * Metallography sample preparation. Metallurgical testing. * AA, XRF and DCP spectrometers * Sedigraph and Malvern Particle distribution analyzers * Physical testing apparatus: FSSS, Ro-Tap (Sieve analysis), Hall Flow, Powder Density. * Carbon, Sulfur, Oxygen and Nitrogen analysis instrumentation. * Microwave Digestion system * VS sintering furnace operation; CNC press operation. Skills/Knowledge Required: * Knowledge of measuring and testing techniques. * Advanced mathematical skills * Ability to interface with others in a training capacity * Knowledge of inorganic chemistry, knowledge of metallurgy preferred. * Excellent written and oral communication skills. * Highly competent in using Microsoft programs. Able to analyze network programs supporting lab and manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and test data distribution. * Must be detail oriented and able to work under pressure in a demanding fast paced environment. * Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes Experience Guidelines: * Minimum of 1 year industrial lab experience strongly preferred Education Guidelines: * Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry or Engineering.
