Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Founded in 1968, The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research is one of the oldest and largest centers of its kind in the United States. Due to its unique position in the organizational structure of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Sheps Center is able to offer an extensive array of resources and services to the proposed project.

The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research seeks to improve the health of individuals, families, and populations by understanding the problems, issues, and alternatives in the design and delivery of health care services. This is accomplished through an interdisciplinary program of research, consultation, technical assistance, and training that focuses on timely and policy-relevant questions concerning the accessibility, adequacy, organization, cost, and effectiveness of health care services, and the dissemination of this information to policymakers and the general public.

Position Summary

The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research is a world-renowned, university-based research center, in which over 100 faculty, fellows, and research staff conduct a broad array of research activities in a collegial, interdisciplinary environment.

The Program on Aging, Chronic Illness, and Long- Term Care is one of the largest of the Sheps Center programs. Directed by Drs. Sheryl Zimmerman and Philip Sloane, the Program encompasses a variety of research activities focusing on older adults who reside in the community and in residential long-term care settings. Projects range from descriptive studies to pragmatic and randomized controlled trials, addressing topics such as quality of care and quality improvement in nursing homes and assisted living; falls reduction and pneumonia prevention; care for people living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias; and the needs of staff who work in long-term care.

The Research Analyst will be an integral part of the project team, at 50% FTE.

Overriding responsibilities of this position include independent data analysis and participation in proposal and manuscript preparation. For projects in the data collection stage, the analyst will guide the development of data sets by planning the overall data structure, overseeing the sampling process, reviewing data collection forms or files, overseeing the construction of entry screens, supervising entry, conducting reliability studies, overseeing/performing data cleaning and report preparation.

For projects in the analytical stage, the analyst will work with project investigators including the biostatistician to design and conduct appropriate analyses, draft methods and results sections of papers related to the analyses, create tables and figures, and for selected projects summarize relevant literature related to the conceptualization and interpretation of the analyses. The candidate will have deep understanding of analytical methods appropriate to each projects' individual data collection methods and outcomes.

The analyst will be able to run descriptive statistics and recommend and run analytical tests independently. The analyst will have experience of a statistical software of their choosing (SAS, Stata, SPSS, or others; this program's typical use of program is Stata), and be able to clean large data sets, merge data, and run analyses in this software independently.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Expert in use of statistical tools (e.g., SPSS, SAS, R), conducting analyses independently, and creating data tables and graphics; participation in related proposal and/or manuscript/dissemination material.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

3-5 years of relevant experience in conducting analyses independently. Excellent academic writing skills. Experience in aging research is preferred.
