The Underwriting Research and Development (UW R&D) team enables innovation in Guardian's underwriting approach, optimizing underwriting spend, improving the client and agent experience, and developing smarter risk selection. The Underwriting, Research & Development Analyst, will be particularly focused on performing data analysis and deriving insights from the data that will help enhance current underwriting processes.

You are:

An independent, detail-oriented individual who is able to communicate effectively and concisely with all levels within the organization. The successful candidate will work with detailed analysis and be able to tell a story based on findings to support issues and advocate for recommendations on a strategic level.

You have:

  • Experience handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to lead and/or support projects as appropriate.

  • Strong working knowledge of data analysis tools, such as Microsoft Excel, SQL, Tableau, etc.

  • Ability to interpret and present results of statistical analyses.

  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; able to proactively incorporate different perspectives and ideas into work product.

  • An enthusiasm to take on challenging assignments and the tenacity to push through obstacles, solve problems and get the job done.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within cross-functional teams

  • Bachelors' degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Quantitative Finance or a similar quantitative field preferred

  • 1-3 years of life insurance and/ or disability insurance experience preferred

  • 1-3 years of data analysis experience (including internships)

  • Underwriting knowledge not required, but a plus

You will:

Under moderate supervision, the incumbent will support efforts that will help enhance current underwriting processes and contribute to new processes and products. Key activities include:

  • Underwriting Research and Strategy
  • Support business case assessments on various underwriting innovations and building of strategic roadmaps, with focus on data mining and discovery.
  • Implementation of New UW Programs or Projects
  • Support projects that will enhance our underwriting process. Current examples include development of Guardian's accelerated UW program and assessment of new risk selection/fraud management tools.
  • Measurement of Underwriting Results
  • Help identify current underwriting reporting gaps and deliver new dashboards to better measure processes and results. Improve reporting and analytics across all aspects of the underwriting lifecycle to better measure processes and results.
  • Collaboration with various underwriting stakeholders
  • Coordinates with internal and external partners to develop underwriting strategy, execute on critical underwriting projects and maintain organizational alignment. Key stakeholders include underwriting, actuarial, data science, IT, outside vendors and reinsurers.

Location:

Bethlehem PA preferred, but will consider other office locations/with work from home flexibility

SUMMARY Collaborates with relationship managers in gathering and evaluating commercial credit related information on current and prospective customers by preparing written reports of analysis which include in-depth analysis of financial statements, historical and projection based cash flow and ratio analysis, suggested credit structure, general industry analysis and identified risks. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned. * Prepares financial spreads for various types of businesses. * Analyzes credit worthiness of commercial applicants, and guarantors, as appropriate by reviewing loan application, spreading historical and projection based financial statements, calculating cash flows, identifying key risks and conducting research on borrowers and industries. * Analyzes findings and authors a comprehensive report of analysis using a mix of data analysis (charts, formulas, graphs, etc.) and written narrative. * Evaluates credit quality, suggesting loans to upgraded or downgraded based on most recent information. * Possesses proficiency relative to credit transactions and analytical skills sufficient to enable independent underwriting of commercial requests for streamlined to complex requests with limited guidance from immediate manager. * Ensures compliance to applicable regulations and keeps up-to-date with changes in federal regulations and FIB credit policy requirements. * Assists the Relationship Manager in completing problem loan reports. * Completes financial performance metric covenant testing. The ideal candidate: * Must have strong organization and time management skills. * Must have excellent written and verbal skills. * Must have the ability to develop and maintain internal and external relationships such as Relationship Managers, Credit Officers, and Risk Management Personnel. * Must be able to work in a fast paced environment, set priorities, establish and meet strict deadlines with flexibility to adapt quickly to changing priorities. * Must be self-motivated and possess the ability to assist with credit risk decisions. * Must have strong analytical and problem solving skills as well as an attention to detail. * Must have the ability to prioritize and with others in an integrated way to achieve individual objectives and team results with flexibility to adapt to changing volumes and areas of focus (new vs. renewal). * Must have experience in supporting recommendations when challenged and in negotiating when appropriate.
