Participants in the Willkie House programming range from five to 18 years of age, with the majority of these participants coming from low-income families.
The ethnic backgrounds of the participants mirror the ethnic makeup of the greater Des Moines community, with the majority being children and families of color. Member Duties : The population served by the VISTA will primarily be low-income youth of color. The VISTA will develop specific standards and procedures for staff and families through the creation of handbooks, as well as implementing a program for volunteers/partners/funders to become more involved and assist with facility improvement.
Through these processes, the VISTA will directly assist in growing Willkie House programming and reach through the resources created. The VISTA member will be working directly with local universities, black led organizations, and partner organizations to ensure best practices and engagement of volunteers that will best assist the Willkie House in its mission.
