Job Title: American Sign Language Teacher (Grades 7-12) Job Category: YCT Department/Group: Job Description Job Summary: The American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher will provide high-quality instruction to students in Grades 7 through 12. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ASL education, Deaf culture, a passion for teaching, and a commitment to student success.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
NYS Certification in ASL or Deaf Education instruction or equivalent.
Proven experience teaching ASL in a secondary education setting.
Strong understanding of Deaf culture and the ability to integrate cultural awareness into curriculum and teaching.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to design and implement effective curriculum and lesson plans.
Commitment to professional development and continuous learning.
Primary Activities
Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that meet the educational needs of students in grades 7-12.
Teach ASL as a second language to a diverse student body with varying levels of initial proficiency.
Evaluate and assess student progress and adapt teaching methods to suit individual needs.
Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and promotes respect for Deaf culture.
Collaborate with colleagues to integrate ASL into broader curriculum goals.
Organize and participate in school events, activities, and programs that promote ASL and Deaf culture.
Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress and opportunities for enrichment.
Stay current with the latest educational methodologies and practices in ASL education through continuing education and professional development.
Proficient in utilizing learning management systems (LMS) to enhance instruction, streamline communication, and manage educational resources effectively. This includes creating and sharing course materials, facilitating online discussions, tracking student progress, and integrating interactive tools to support a dynamic learning environment.
