POSITION: American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter

PURPOSE:

Provide interpretation appropriate to student language and communication needs and goals, in all academic settings, including ancillary service sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.Current NM Public Education Department License for Interpreter for the Deaf

2.Masters Degree

3.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILTIES:

1.Comply with the state approved Code of Ethics of the Education Profession and uphold and enforce department/unit rules, administrative directives and regulations, Board Policy, and State and Federal regulations.

2.Provide tutoring support in academic skills, ASL and communication skills, and ASL-English interpretation consumer skills, through modeling and direct instruction.

3.ASL support in concert with Deaf ASL mentor through NMSD, and following specifically designed curriculum modeled on the ASL CIA (Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment) guidelines for grade-level learning for ASL heritage students (see https://www.aslcia.net/).

4.Contribute to and lead some staff training and awareness in working with D/HH students, and provide general informational support for hearing staff.

5.Accompany and interpret for student on field trips to Deaf community events.

6.Compete Medicaid billing for services provided to students in an efficient, comprehensive, and timely manner.

7.Participate in state testing as a test administrator for students with modifications and/or accommodations as needed.

8.Perform other tasks as deemed appropriate and necessary by immediate supervisor and/or the Superintendent.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required. Adequate vision and hearing ability for monitoring children's verbal and non-verbal responses. Ability to provide a quality speech and language model for students and staff.

SAFETY AND HEALTH:

Knowledge of Universal Hygiene Precautions.

WORK AND ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS:

1.Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality as an essential and frequent condition of employment.

2.Must be able to be flexible and patient to work with frequent interruptions as an essential and frequent condition of employment.

3.Must be able to interact with the public and staff in a tactful and cooperative manner as an essential and continuous requirement of employment.

4.Must be able to work extended work hours and travel as an essential and occasional condition of employment.

5.Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision.

6.Requires extra duties and/or additional working hours based on salary increment.

7.Requires much traveling, depending on caseload.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As approved by the Superintendent

SALARY: As per district salary schedule

EVALUATION: Performance of the job will be conducted on an annual basis
