Qualifications Required:

  • Valid Arkansas elementary education teaching license

  • Minimum of three (3) years successful teaching and/or counseling experience in elementary

Preferred:

  • Dual Special Education certification

  • Skill in consistently implementing positive behavioral supports, de-escalation strategies, and trauma-informed practices

  • Deep knowledge of social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies, curriculum, and instructional strategies

  • Basic Behavioral Analytic Skills

The CLAWS/PAWS teacher works under the direct supervision of the K-8 ALE Director in conjunction with the Director of Student Services to ensure the alternative learning program is effectively implemented as approved by the Arkansas Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Job Description

The CLAWS/PAWS Instructor is an individual who has deep knowledge and skill in research- and evidence-based practices for teaching social-emotional and behavioral skills. The instructor works with one paraprofessional to provide individualized and group support to no more than twelve (12) 3-5 who have, or are regarded as having, an impairment(s) that substantially limits the ability to cope and learn successfully in a general education setting.

Essential Job Functions

  • Directly teach Tier III social, emotional and behavioral skills, emotion regulation strategies, coping skills, and conflict resolution skills to individual students and small groups.

  • Provide differentiated academic and social-emotional learning and appropriate behavioral skills throughout the school day, ensuring students the opportunity to learn and practice SEL skills embedded within appropriate essential learning standards..

  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, parents, and professional mental health providers to identify and effectively meet students' behavioral needs.

  • Conduct, collect and analyze baseline data to establish student action plan goals and progress monitor and document student growth toward goals.

  • Engage in ongoing professional development and stay current with SEL research, trauma informed practice, and best practices.

  • Maintain confidentiality of all student information.

  • Train and gain the ability to analyze situations and take appropriate action using state approved strategies.

  • Demonstrate flexibility and creativity and be able to work with frequent interruptions.
