Algorithms Developer

Northstrat is seeking an experienced and driven Algorithms Developer to join our dynamic DECON+ Algs team. The ideal candidate will have a background in advanced mathematics and physics, with experience in astrophysics being a significant advantage. This role requires a self-starter who can take vaguely defined tasks and independently deliver high-quality solutions while collaborating closely with a team of experts.

Key Responsibilities

· Collaborate with a team astrophysics expert to interpret legacy system astro algorithms and processes (written in Fortran, C++, and Matlab), compare results to new algorithms, and recommend improvements.

· Develop and maintain robust, scalable, and high-performance applications.

· Aggregate and characterize test data outputs to identify problem areas.

· Work with developers to troubleshoot and resolve algorithm performance problems.

· Support the entire product lifecycle from requirements analysis to deployment.

· Participate in code reviews, testing, and debugging.

· Contribute to architectural decisions and the evolution of our tech stack.

· Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and implement new features.

· Utilize high-level math and physics expertise to solve complex problems.

· Apply Agile software development methodologies in your work

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in physics, astrophysics, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Must have at least 5+ years of relevant experience.
• Proficiency in high-level math and physics, with advanced study in physics; astrophysics is a plus.
• Strong skills in Fortran, Matlab, and C++.
• Ability to work well with others in a collaborative environment.
• Ability to learn on the fly and be comfortable implementing concepts that may not be fully understood.
• Understanding of Agile Scrum practices and traditional waterfall projects.
• Active or current Top-Secret clearance with SCI access (TSSCI).
• Ability to obtain a SIPR card and periodically work in a SCIF.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Continuous Integration and Automated Testing using tools like Jenkins/Hudson, Selenium, JUnit, etc.
• Knowledge of Java Instrumentation and Performance Monitoring.
• Experience with NoSQL databases like MongoDB or Cassandra.
• Understanding of server virtualization using VMWare.
• Web development skills in HTML5, JavaScript, Flash, JSP, GWT, or other frameworks.

Flex Time

Northstrat does not mandate specific working hours. Although project requirements may dictate schedules, a Northstrat employee is only required to work an average of 8 hours per weekday over the course of a month. IBA Benefits accrue each month in the amount equivalent to 50% of the employee’s monthly compensation rate. That is, the effective dollar amount of this accrual is in addition to an employee’s salary.

Profit Sharing Plan (PSP)

The PSP is a qualified retirement plan that Northstrat funds semi-annually on the employee’s behalf through the IBA in the amount equivalent to 25% (up to the IRS contribution limit) of the employee’s compensation. That is, of the 50% accrual in the IBA, half of the amount accrued is applied to the PSP.

Stock Options

Because Northstrat is an employee-owned company, all new employees are offered stock options. Employees have the opportunity to receive additional stock options based on accomplishment of individual performance goals. Stock owners elect the Board of Directors and are directly impacted by the success of the company.
