USC Alfred E. Mann Institute Managing Director of Research Investments

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Research Strategy and Innovation, the USC Alfred E. Mann Institute (USC AMI) Managing Director of Research Investments will ensure that the institute meets its intended mission of seeding translational research in biomedicine and incubating start-ups and fostering the development of commercialize able biomedical innovations.

Specifically, the managing director will serve as the sole general partner (GP) who manages AMI as a venture capital fund that invests in companies ("USC companies") associated with USC by virtue of a relationship between the company and a USC alumnus, staff, student, or faculty (e.g., a founder or advisor). The managing director will have established relationships with venture capital firms (VCs), venture capital general partners (VC GPs), individual limited partners (LPs), institutional LPs, and family offices that make investments in one or more market sectors (e.g., health technology) that is the focus of research as related to USC's academic and educational mission. The managing director will work closely with the USC AMI Advisory Committee to oversee operations and strategic funding priorities of the institute, establish the institute's strategic agenda, and coordinate other matters related to the institute's operations and funding priorities.

Specific activities include:

  • Make key strategic decisions, including which ventures to invest in (but will not take a board seat for the USC company after the investment has been made).

  • Work closely with VCs, as well as individuals and entities that invest capital in VCs. These include individual LPs, e.g., high-net-worth individuals and angel investors; institutional LPs, e.g., pension funds, endowments, foundations, sovereign wealth funds; and family offices, e.g., private firms that manage the finances of wealthy families.

  • Identify VCs, entities, and individuals who are willing to take the lead in investing in a USC company. Support the identified lead investor to conduct comprehensive due diligence of the company.

  • Upon successful completion of due diligence, the managing director will invest AMI funds in the USC company and will work with the lead investor on the deal structure and terms (e.g., equity anti-dilution clauses) to finance the USC company.

  • Work to facilitate a company's liquidity event (exit) via initial public offering (IPO), merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), merger and acquisitions, or liquidating a stake in the secondary market.

  • Interact, partner, and coordinate with USC Advancement, centrally and within each school, as well as incubators (e.g., Viterbi Startup Garage, Marshall/Greif Incubator), other venture funds within USC (e.g., Viterbi Venture Fund), and other USC offices (e.g., Office of the General Counsel, Compliance, USC Stevens Center for Innovation) and programs (USC - Techstars partnership).

The annual base salary range for this position is $275,767.44 - $310,000.00 . When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

Bachelor's degree

Minimum Skills:

Comprehensive understanding of the capital markets, investment theory and be able to apply knowledge to the development of portfolio management strategies.

Preferred Education:

Master's degree Business Administration

Specialized/technical training Accounting

Preferred Experience:

10 years

Preferred Skills:

Experience at another endowment/foundation, pension fund, consultant or fund of funds in both public and private markets.
