Job Summary

Alaska Overview

ConocoPhillips is Alaska's largest crude oil producer and largest owner of exploration leases, with approximately 1.2 million net undeveloped acres at year-end 2022. The company produced an average of 200 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2022. ConocoPhillips has major ownership interests in two of North America's largest legacy conventional oil fields, both located on Alaska's North Slope: Kuparuk, which the company operates, and Prudhoe Bay. Additionally, ConocoPhillips operates several fields on the Western North Slope. The company has an ownership interest in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) and owns/operates the Polar Tankers fleet.

Description

Following the Willow, West Willow, Narwhal, and Coyote discoveries, and recent acreage capture in the Brookian Topset play, ConocoPhillips plans to execute an operated drilling program to further explore and delineate the Brookian Play as well as other plays. Near term work will focus on high-grading the captured leasehold / portfolio, maturing prospects to drill ready status, well planning and execution, and evaluating post drill results.

ConocoPhillips Alaska Exploration is currently accepting applications for an experienced Geologist to lead and coordinate integrated subsurface evaluations, ahead of an active rig program, from subsurface to economic evaluation. The position will reside in the Exploration Prospect Maturation team and will coordinate the efforts to identify and high-grade subsurface opportunities, mature leads to drill ready prospects, and evaluate post drill results. The individual is also expected to have strong integration skills and lead / assist with joint studies and seismic projects with the Global Technical Functions or external vendors. The successful candidate will be expected to engage with the broader Alaska BU geoscience community and responsibilities will include providing mentoring support across Exploration and Development teams.

Job Description

Responsibilities may include:

  • Generating integrated geoscience technical assessments of exploration opportunities and performing regional scale play evaluations

  • Maturing prospects to drill ready status, completing technical assurance, supporting well planning, drilling execution, integration of post-drill results, and appraisal evaluation as appropriate

  • Regional petroleum system synthesis from well logs, cores, outcrop, and seismic data assessments

  • Collaborating with geophysicists, reservoir engineers, drilling engineers, facilities engineers, and financial analyst to characterize risk, resource volumes, and economic value of exploration prospects

  • Supporting geologic studies conducted through Global Technical Functions and external contractors

  • Partnering with development geoscientists to facilitate effective knowledge sharing across the business unit

  • Interpretation of both 2D & 3D seismic data sets; including stack and attribute volumes

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Master's degree or higher in Geoscience or foreign equivalent

  • 7+ years of experience as an exploration, appraisal or development geoscientist

  • 1+ years of experience identifying opportunities and maturation of prospects to drill-ready status

  • 1+ years of experience utilizing seismic sequence stratigraphic concepts and working with geophysicists to constrain geologic models for reservoir characterization with seismic data

  • Intermediate level knowledge of Petrel

  • Beginner level knowledge of ArcGIS

Preferred:

  • 1+ years of experience in decision and risk analysis

  • 1+ years of experience in clastic depositional systems, seismic sequence stratigraphy, and geophysical modeling methods

  • Advanced interpersonal and communication skills and ability to contribute within a multi-disciplinary team environment

  • Advanced multi-tasking skills with ability to manage multiple ongoing activities

  • Intermediate knowledge of deltaic and shallow marine systems and Alaska subsurface

  • Intermediate knowledge of subsurface project management, project economics, and prospect portfolio management

  • Intermediate proficiency in prospect risking and characterizing prospects in GeoX

  • Comfortable working in both data-intensive and data-poor environments

  • Proven track record of effective mentoring and knowledge sharing with other geoscientists

  • Ability to translate technical opportunities into a business case and convey associated uncertainty

  • Builds effective solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that are safe and ethical

  • Listens actively and invites new ideas for exchanged opinions, then influences and acts to drive positive performance and achieve results

  • Builds positive relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals
