Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled work in support of the operation and maintenance of The Suffolk Executive Airport.  Tasks include refueling aircraft; operating radio equipment; processing customer payments and performing minor maintenance and repair on airport equipment and buildings, facilities and grounds.

Employee must exercise independent judgment in the completion of duties. Employee must exercise tact and courtesy with airport tenants and customers. Reports to the Airport Manager.

This position is part time, up to 29 hours per week. Schedule is flexible however employee must work a minimum of one Friday and Saturday per month.

Provide full-service aircraft refueling, assist customers and process payments, provides receipts and retrieves computerized fuel charges of the previous day.

Inspects fuel farm and refueler trucks; conducts daily fuel inspections and quality assurance testing; transfers fuel from storage tanks to refueler trucks; maintains and reconciles records of fuel sales.

Marshall aircraft into parking spots.  Tow aircraft as needed.

Conducts and documents inspections of various airport systems and instruments including Airfield Lighting and the Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS).

Performs general maintenance and conducts daily inspections of runways, taxiways, tie down ropes, wind indicators and other instruments of the airport system.

Performs maintenance and custodial duties for the airport terminal and hangars, including semi-skilled carpentry, electrical, plumbing and painting.  Effect minor surface maintenance and repair; including sweeping, applying crack sealants, and defoliants.

Performs daily maintenance checks on airport vehicles and makes minor repairs.

Operates a radio to provide incoming and outgoing aircraft advisory information such as wind speed and direction, number and position of other aircraft in the area, and the runway in use; issues notices to airmen (NOTAMS).

Operates and maintains power equipment to include large agricultural tractors, commercial, zero turn and push type mowers, edgers, weed trimmers, chain saws, and blowers.

Open and secure airport terminal.

Responsible for the safe operation of the airport without supervision on weekends.

Answers telephone and responds to inquiries regarding airport services and area lodging or other services for travelers.

Performs other related duties as required, or directed by the airport manager.

Graduation from high school and 1 to 2 years of experience in airport maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Requires a valid driver's license.

Knowledge of the procedures, materials and equipment related to airport systems and the various instruments relating to proficient airport operation.

Proficient in the operation of large, agricultural tractors and mowing implements.

Knowledge of and is skilled in the methods, techniques and equipment of the carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical trades, and building and grounds maintenance.

Knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of two way radios.

Knowledge of the geographic layout of the City and surrounding area.

Knowledge of the tools and equipment used to refuel aircraft.

Skilled in the use and care of a variety of hand and power tools.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instruction.

Ability to make simple mathematical calculations and provide correct change.

Ability to perform strenuous work for varying lengths of time under varying weather conditions.

Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with airport customers and the general public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions from superiors.

Ability to read correspondence, invoices, receipts, reports, inventory sheets, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, forms, sales reports, work orders, inventory reports, etc., using prescribed formats. Requires the ability to speak with poise, voice control and confidence.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English.

Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages.

Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
