Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for providing police protection and security for the San Antonio International Airport, including the terminals, Air Operations Area, and airport complex by enforcing all applicable laws and ordinances. Working conditions areinside and outside with occasional exposure to extreme weatherconditions, hostile people, and emergency situations. Exercises nosupervision.

Work Hours

San Antonio Airport Police Academy; 7:45 a.m.

  • 4:30 p.m., Monday

  • Friday

Pending successful completion of the Academy, officer will be assigned to a shift based on opening and seniority.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides police protection and security for the general public.

  • Provides law enforcement support to the airlines, vendors, tenants, passengers, and TSA passenger screening operations.

  • Controls and directs traffic and issues city ordinance violations, parking and traffic citations, and misdemeanor citations.

  • Initiates arrests, when appropriate, in response to Federal, State, and local laws and city ordinances.

  • Responds to all emergency situations.

  • Investigates traffic accidents, fire, burglary, robbery alarms, and security door alarms.

  • Prepares and submits required reports on incidents, accidents, and offenses.

  • Patrolling the area and monitoring activities at the airport and its terminals may require standing, walking, twisting, kneeling, and may require running, handling a firearm and modern police equipment in response to emergencies.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency.

  • Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.

  • At the time of application, applicants must possess a current and unrestricted Texas Peace Officer's license (certification) issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), or be immediately licensable by TCOLE upon appointment.

  • Must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Threat Assessment clearance upon employment.

  • Must maintain federally mandated security clearance required to work at an airport at all times.

  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.

  • Experience as a Peace Officer.

Employment Conditions

  • Must be able to successfully pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT) which takes the form of a job simulation exercise based on the obstacle course at the SAPD Training Academy. The PAT is comprised of two parts. Part I is an obstacle course run. Part II of the Physical Ability Test (PAT) includes: Handgun Simulation. Both parts assess a candidate's ability to sustain pursuit of a suspect while encountering common obstacles and tasks. For a detailed explanation of the PAT, click here.   • Must be able to successfully pass a medical evaluation by a physician employed by the City of San Antonio to determine the Applicant's physical ability and well-being to withstand the rigors of law enforcement related activities.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a psychological evaluation administered by a Psychologist/Psychiatrist employed by the City of San Antonio to determine the Applicant's mental clarity and stability with respect to the high stresses associated with law enforcement activities.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a screening for illicit drug use and a polygraph examination administered by a licensed polygraph examiner hired by the City of San Antonio.

  • Traffic citations for four (4) or more hazardous moving traffic offenses with any disposition other than "not guilty" within the twelve (12) months preceding the date of application is a disqualifying item.

  • Involvement as a driver in two (2) or more motor vehicle accidents within the preceding twenty-four (24) months where the applicant's actions contributed to the accident in any way.

  • Applicants must be a U.S. citizen.

  • Applicants must be able to read, write and speak in the English language.

  • May be disqualified for any unsuitable factors disclosed during their Personal History Statement and in the background investigation process.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, additional background checks may be conducted.
