The Position

The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) is seeking full-time Airport Facilities Custodians to join our dedicated Building Maintenance and Services team.

At the RTAA, our Airport Facilities Custodians are critical to helping keep the Reno-Tahoe International Airport sparkling clean and safe for the traveling public. There are two (2) positions open; however, the list established may also be used to fill future vacancies as they occur. Both internal and external applicants will be considered. Applicants must be available to work all shifts (day, swing, and graveyard) 7 days a week - including holidays. To be considered for this position, applicants must indicate they are available for day, swing and night shifts (all three), and must check the appropriate boxes under availability on the RTAA online application. Shift assignments are generally determined by seniority using a Shift Bid System.

Airport Facilities Custodians work on the front line both indoors and out. They perform the full range of cleaning and custodial tasks in and around airport buildings, terminals, facilities, sidewalks, curb areas, parking lots, garage, and taxicab holding areas. This work includes heavy duty cleaning, including stripping and waxing of tile floors, shampooing carpets, cleaning ceilings, and shoveling snow from sidewalks and entrances. The nature of this work requires the candidate to be able to operate cleaning and custodial equipment - including scrubbers, buffers, carpet extractors, wet and dry vacuums, high lift, fork lift and snow equipment.

Airport Facilities Custodians are also part of our larger customer service team. This team is dedicated to helping provide the public with a pleasant and safe experience while traveling through the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. All of our Airport Facilities Custodians are expected to approach their work with a positive, helpful, customer service mindset. The nature of the work requires one to speak and read English well enough to perform the job's essential duties, while maintaining a safe work environment.

Examples of Duties:

  • Clean restrooms and replenishing supplies.

  • Keep floors clean; strip and wax tile floors; shampoo carpets.

  • Wash windows and glass doors; cleaning ceilings.

  • Empty and clean trash receptacles and ashtrays, and other routine cleaning tasks.

  • Identify and report maintenance and repair needs throughout assigned areas.

  • Ensure that custodial supplies, materials and equipment are ready to complete work assignments.

  • Participate in snow removal by keeping the entrances, landside roads, parking areas, ramps and walkways clear through the use of hand shovels and squeegees.

  • Assist traveling customers and other Airport divisions and tenants as needed.

The physical demands of the work include:

  • Sufficient dexterity to enable regular use of hands and fingers to operate various types of custodial cleaning and snow removal equipment.

  • The ability to stand, walk, kneel, crouch down, stoop, crawl, twist, and climb.

  • The ability to perform light to strenuous physical/manual labor.

  • The ability to use safe lifting techniques to routinely lift/carry/push/pull 25 pound objects and occasionally lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

The working conditions may include:

  • Performing work under various environmental conditions (within both climate controlled and non-climate controlled environments) involving exposure to cold, heat, and inclement weather.

  • Performing work around moderate to high noise levels, vibrations, and at heights and/or within confined/cramped spaces.

  • Performing work in environments that include exposure to contaminants such as blood borne pathogens, chemicals, dust, flammable materials, electricity and mechanical hazards.

Salary: $13.02 - $16.47 / hour, with opportunity for additional merit-based increases to a range maximum of $19.92 per hour. In addition, employees working non-day shifts receive an additional $1.50 per hour of shift differential pay. Initial salary placement is based upon experience and qualifications. This is an hourly and overtime eligible position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent certificate AND one (1) year of custodial experience in a commercial building environment. OR Three (3) years of custodial experience in a commercial building environment.

Licensing: A valid driver's license is required at time of application. Must obtain an RTAA ramp license within the first thirty (30) days of employment.

Selection Procedure:

Review of Application: After submission, the application will be reviewed to determine if it is complete and if minimum qualifications are met. For those applicants found to meet minimum qualifications, the next step of the process will be an application evaluation. Interview Process: Based on the application evaluation process, only qualified applicants will be considered for an interview. The interview process may include an initial panel interview, followed by subsequent assessment exercises to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks and/or employment interviews with other RTAA personnel.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
The RTAA requires each candidate to successfully complete employment history verification prior to being considered for employment. All employment offers are subject to successful completion/passing of a drug-screening test, a fingerprint criminal history records check, and security badging test.
