Job Description and Duties

The Monitoring and Laboratory Division is seeking an enthusiastic hands-on Air Resources Supervisor I to lead the Air Monitoring South Section. Duties include supervising eleven staff in the operation and development of regulatory monitoring stations located throughout Southern California.

The section conducts the Board's criteria pollutant, air toxics, and PAMS air monitoring programs to provide the data necessary to characterize the nature and extent of air pollution. This supervisor will be responsible for leading a very technical team of air resources engineers,and air pollution specialists by planning, assigning, scheduling, and tracking work projects, providing formal and informal feedback to staff, and meeting with division management, staff, vendors, manufacturers, and other stakeholders to maintain and improve monitoring operations and to meet EPA and data client needs. The position has diverse responsibilities from staff management and development, budgeting, facilities, fleet and asset management to coaching staff with instrument troubleshooting and repair, QA/QC, data review and analyses, procurement and contract management requiring a technical understanding of operation and maintenance of criteria and toxic pollutant samplers and real time monitors.This supervisor will routinely coordinate with other sections in the branch to achieve and maintain consistency in operations throughout CARB's ambient air monitoring network.

This position can be located in Riverside County or Kern County.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position's designated headquarters location at their own expense

  • Requires being stationary, consistent with office work, for extended periods.

  • Standard office environment (artificial lighting, controlled temperature, etc.)

  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.

  • Must be abel to move/transport air monitoring equipment weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accomadation.

  • The ability to climb ladders, including wall mounted rung ladders, to access rooftops.

The successful candidate will be experienced in air monitoring and state of the art monitoring equipment and must be innovative, motivated, energetic, and willing to assist staff with physical work assignments (equipment installations, site moves, etc.) and data evaluations. Working knowledge of the various business units at CARB is a plus.

The successful candidate must have a commitment to providing high quality data that meets regulatory requirements.
