The Mobile Source Laboratory Division (MSLD) is seeking an Air Resources Supervisor I (ARSI) to lead the Equipment Support Section (ESS). The mission of the ESS is to provide expertise in the maintenance, failure diagnosis and resolution of problems with dynamometers, laboratory testing, sampling, measurement and calibration equipment and their interaction with laboratory infrastructure and test cell automation systems. Under general direction of the Air Resources Supervisor II, the ARSI would be responsible for coordinating and supervising the work of the Section, including the initial evaluation of staff capabilities in the operation of testing, sampling, measurement and calibration equipment, and the identification of training needs for staff to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to bridge the knowledge gap between test cell, QA/QC, and AVL on-site support staff to quickly resolve issues preventing the utilization of test cells per CFR requirements.

Working Conditions

This position is not currently eligible for telework. The incumbent will be required to report to the position's designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.

  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.

  • Duties will be conducted within a cutting-edge, climate-controlled laboratory environment, and occasionally in the field or on travel status (less than 20% of the time).

  • Works at elevated heights or near fast moving machinery or traffic.

  • Duties require use of hearing protection and annual hearing examinations.

The most competitive candidate will be a self starter with excellent technical skills, analytical and critical thinking qualities, good oral communication skills, outstanding writing abilities and be able to meet firm deadlines. They should have a strong background in engineering, chemistry and electronics and be familiar with basic concepts in mobile source emissions measurement, instrumental analysis, quality control and quality assurance, diagnostics and troubleshooting electronic equipment.

Candidates with experience or knowledge of light-, heavy-duty or engine testing, sampling, measurement and analysis are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should be team oriented and have the ability to lead a team to accomplish project goals. Excellent organization, leadership and negotiation skills are essential for this position.
