If you have a strong background in epidemiology or a related health science, and demonstrated knowledge of statistical analysis, and are committed to helping CARB better understand, evaluate, and communicate the broader benefits of air pollution control efforts, this position is for you.
The Air Pollution Specialist (APS) position is located within the Health and Ecosystem Assessment Section (HEAS) in Research Division's Health and Exposure Assessment Branch. The HEAS provides scientific and technical support for the Board's efforts to achieve statewide air pollution and climate goals.
This rewarding and challenging position is responsible for evaluating a broad range of air pollution impacts on health by using various methodologies and research projects to support the Board's regulations and programs. This work includes planning and conducting critical reviews of scientific research including environmental justice to be used as the basis of many of CARB's air pollution and climate change regulatory activities.
In addition, the successful candidate will be performing the scientific and administrative oversight of health effects research contracts. It is also an essential component of this position to communicate effectively about health effects in writing or verbal presentation to a wide range of audiences including internal staff, other state agencies, and the public through reports, correspondence, meetings, and workgroups.

Working Conditions
This position is not currently eligible for telework. The incumbent will be required to report to the position's designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.
Position located in a high-rise building.
Requires being stationary, consistent with office work, for extended periods.
Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.

Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
The successful candidate will have experience and knowledge in epidemiology or a related health science, and statistical analysis. The ability to interpret the health and statistical significance of research findings is required.
Experience working specifically on health impacts of air pollution is desired. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work effectively and cooperatively with a diverse stakeholder group, and strong interpersonal skills are necessary. The ability to work proactively and efficiently on multiple projects with firm deadlines is expected. The candidate must be a team player with a positive attitude, dedication, and a desire to make original and sustained contributions to CARB.
