ABOUT THE POSITION

The County of Riverside seeks candidates to fill positions throughout Riverside County. A list of eligible candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies.

The County of Riverside's Facilities Management Department is seeking Air Conditioning Mechanics for the Riverside and Murrieta, CA, location. The Air Conditioning Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing and resolving HVAC system issues, performing routine maintenance, and installing new air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating equipment. A position in this class involves duties at the full journey level. Work is performed independently, and supervision received consists of general and specific job assignments and inspection of finished work.

The ideal candidate will have 4 years or more of journey level experience with air conditioning systems, maintenance, repairs, and installations. Possession of a Universal EPA Technician Certificate is required, Rule 608 if the Clean Air Act.

A successful Security Clearance conducted by the Sheriffs' Department will be required for this position.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday, following the 9/80 schedule.

On-Call rotation occurs periodically based on department needs, typically averaging once every two months or as required. This entails a mandatory 24-hour availability for one week (7 days) during the rotation period.

Riverside County Department of Facilities Management provides property management and operations services for county owned and leased facilities throughout the 7,200 square miles of Riverside County and over 14 million square feet of space. The department is responsible for keeping county buildings safe, comfortable, and productive for both county staff and the public.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Performs journey level work in installing, adjusting, and maintaining all types of air-conditioning, heating, and refrigeration equipment.

  • Works from, schematics, wiring diagrams, or drawings.

  • Must have direct experience with HVAC, boiler, and related equipment and operations including maintenance.

  • Identifies and dismantles malfunctioning equipment and test components using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic test equipment.

  • Replaces electrical, mechanical, or pneumatic components that are worn or defective.

  • Establishes a preventive maintenance schedule for air conditioning and refrigeration equipment; troubleshoots malfunctioning systems or equipment.

  • Cleans coils and other parts, changes filter, adjusts air flow and replaces refrigerant in system.

  • Monitors sequence of refrigeration system and makes necessary adjustments to control level of fluid, pressure, or temperature in the system.

  • Determines parts and equipment needed for maintenance temperature in the system.

  • Determines parts and equipment needed for maintenance and repair work and submits job estimates; fabricates, erects, and maintains sheet metal duct work; tests, calibrates, and repairs thermostats.

  • Maintain and repair HVAC equipment according to manufacturers' recommendations, covering components such as valves, motors, belts, bearings, filters, and lubrication.

  • Supervises assigned helpers; maintains record of inspections and work performed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

OPTION I

Experience:Completion of a recognized air conditioning; refrigeration apprenticeship training program.

OPTION II

Experience:Four year of increasingly responsible experience performing work in installing and repairing air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment.

ALL OPTIONS

Knowledge of:The principles and practices of installing, maintaining, and repairing air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment; Different types of air distribution systems: state and local laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilating equipment; the tools and equipment used in heating and air conditioning maintenance. Basic computer operation for energy management systems use.

Ability to:Read and write English at the level necessary for successful performance; follow oral and written instructions; estimate the quantities of materials and supplies needed to complete a job; detect causes of malfunctions; carry out a preventive maintenance program on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment; keep simple records.

Certification: Must have Universal EPA technician certification per Environmental Protection Agency, Rule 608 of the Clean Air Act.

License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.

Physical Requirements:

Handling HVAC Compressors, Motors, Apparatus and other equipment a needed.

Prolonged standing and kneeling

Ability to work from a ladder, including overhead tasks

Exposure to various weather conditions, including heat and cold outdoor environments
