Summary

This position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Facility Engineering Service at the Detroit VA Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, performing preventative maintenance and repairing all HVAC&R (heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration) equipment and controls.
Responsibilities

Your duties can include but are not limited to the following:
Repairing, troubleshooting, maintaining and installing air conditioning equipment in the hospital and ancillary buildings;
Installing, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining refrigerators, freezers and ice machines, including those utilized for patient food and drugs, laboratory specimens and blood products;
Operating and repairing all aspects of the Siemens Energy Management System to include adding and removing points in the system, building Graphics, modifying and troubleshooting PPCL programing, repairing and replacing sensors, actuators and other control devices, and repairing and replacing LAN devices such as terminal equipment controllers; and
Troubleshooting, diagnosing and making repairs to a large variety of equipment and systems that provide a variety of air-conditioning functions, such as heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification and air cleaning, filtering and circulating.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: You will be lifting and carrying objects weighing 45 pounds or more, pulling, pushing, reaching, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, climbing and bending.

You will operate cranes, trucks, tractors or other motor vehicles. Work may be performed outside and inside in excessive heat or cold, humidity, dampness or chilling. You will be exposed to noise, dust, silica and asbestos, fumes, smoke or gases, solvents, grease and oils. You will work on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, around machinery with moving parts, around moving objects or vehicles, and on ladders and scaffolding.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C . For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success.

Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements.
