The College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking an individual trained in Nutrient Management, Agribusiness Management, Precision Agriculture, or Agronomy to join our nationally recognized Penn State Extension Field and Forage Crops State Team. As a member of the Field and Forage Crops Extension Team, the individual will be responsible for actively working with the team to identify important educational learning objectives and develop and lead educational events to support these learning objectives.

All team members are expected to participate in the development of a diverse external funding portfolio (e.g. grants, contracts, cost recovery, development) in support of the team's programs. The individual will be expected to develop original content to engage audiences through innovative educational methods such as online courses, videos, and electronic publications, in addition to traditional publications and in-person presentations. It is expected that the individual in the position will be able to provide technical support to agricultural producers to accomplish three objectives: adopt production practices that contribute to improved water quality through reduced nutrient and pesticide contamination; develop value added crop production enterprises that contribute to economic growth; and improve pesticide management practices to reduce human exposure and pesticide runoff into surface waters, and reduce the likelihood of pest resistance.

Critical outcomes would be an increased number of nutrient management plans and adoption of approved water quality practices by producers; development of close collaborations with conservation districts would be a positive impact; development of examples of value added crop production and demonstration of improvements in the awareness; knowledge and use of pesticides would also be critical for success. Team members are expected to work closely with university-based research faculty in developing and conducting applied research that is relevant to the state-wide customer needs. The successful candidate will need to develop and/or participate in interdisciplinary collaborations across multiple Extension Program Teams and outside institutions.

While the successful candidate will be based in Mercer County, (463 North Perry Highway, PO Box 530 Mercer) they will be part of a state team and expected to participate and deliver programs across the state. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with degree(s) in nutrient management, plant science, agri-business or other related disciplines, and to those that have related work experience in education or industry.

Desired experience includes writing articles and formal reports on clientele information, managing grants, and providing leadership in a group. While we are seeking disciplinary expertise in nutrient management, it is expected that competitive candidates will have a general understanding of agronomic practices. The individual must be able to work effectively in a team and with the diverse populations and audiences.

Excellent verbal and written communications skills required in English, valued in Spanish. Must possess teaching and interpersonal skills; ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and clientele, and to work as a member of a team. The candidate must be organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Proficiency in the use of computer software packages such as Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint is required. Candidate must have the ability to carry equipment, educational materials and supplies, with or without accommodation. They must possess a valid driver's license, use of a private automobile, and the ability to travel across several counties. Programs are delivered through non-formal setting, such as 4-H clubs, camps, school enrichment, and after-school programs. Volunteers play an important role in the success of these endeavors, serving as club leaders, coaches and mentors. The individual in this position works as a representative of The Pennsylvania State University in the delivery of a comprehensive 4-H Youth Development program in a wide range of 4-H curriculum areas. This includes maintaining and expanding existing local 4-H club programs, supervision of programs delivered by program assistants and volunteers, building community collaborations and partnerships, developing a revenue enhancement portfolio, and creating a professional development plan.
