We are seeking a motivated Agronomic Research Specialist. This position will be located in Scott, MS, reporting to our Nursery Lead.
The Agronomic Research Specialist will assist in overseeing daily operations of a comprehensive, multi-crop program aimed at developing and identifying high yielding hybrids and varieties. The individual will have the opportunity to assist in many phases of a traditional breeding program including seed packaging, planting, pollination, plot maintenance, data collection, and harvest. Additional responsibilities include supervision and training of temporary employees, active participation in station safety and quality programs, and interacting on a professional level with personnel at other breeding stations.
Assist in the coordination of day-to-day nursery seed production activities, including seed packaging, planting, note taking, plot maintenance, and harvesting
Utilization of research field equipment including tractors, planters, harvesters, and various implements.
Utilization of seed processing equipment for research and seed production purposes including ginning, delinting, threshing, drying, cleaning, and treating
Provide support for precision agronomic strategies including GPS, GIS, soil sampling, and new equipment technology and its application into a breeding seed production program
Assist in computer-related activities including office and mobile equipment
Provide day-to-day nursery field support for pollinating, tissue sampling, and crossing.
Ship nursery and seed testing materials
Participate and lead aspects of safety training and inspections
Train and supervise temporary employees
Participate with the team to successfully maintain the Quality Management Standards
Assist in other projects and perform other duties as and when required
Overnight travel through out the year is possible. Occasional 2-3 day periods of travel for training and other meetings are likely during the year.
Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Management, Agricultural Sciences, Plant Breeding, or related field
2-3 years of relevant experience in industry or academic research
Ability to execute protocols
Ability to work extended hours and/or travel during the peak planting, pollinating and harvest seasons
Experience utilizing MS Office Suite
Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams
Demonstrated ability to balance and prioritize tasks
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
Familiarity with breeding methodologies
Training and experience in experimental design, seed production management, statistics and data interpretation
Broad knowledge of crop production and farming practices
Broad knowledge of farm equipment operation and repair
Demonstrated experience taking initiative and delivering results
Team leadership and supervisory experience
Pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain pesticide applicator license
