HelpDuties Summary

This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service, Northwest Irrigation and Soils Research Laboratory (NWISRL), in Kimberly, Idaho. The mission of the NWISRL is to develop solutions for production and environmental problems in irrigated crop and animal production systems.

The incumbent of this position will actively participate in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment.

Responsibilities

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing pesticides and fertilizers for use in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse.

  • Maintaining records and compiling data and other information from various sources.

  • Using Global Positioning System (GPS) for precision tractor guidance in agronomic research plots.

  • Loading and transporting farm equipment over the road to off-site locations using trucks and/or trailers following commercial vehicle regulations.

WORK ENVIRONENT

The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-8:

Qualifying experience for GS-8 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in research projects related to agricultural production; collecting and analyzing samples for laboratory analysis; documenting research activities in field research plots; and utilizing spreadsheets to tabulate data reports summarizing research progress and results.

OR

Education: Two academic years of graduate education or a master's degree if directly related to the position. Related degrees include scientific or technical degrees such as biology, chemistry, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, agriculture, agronomy, or plant sciences.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
