Duties

Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization, Plains Area, Natural Resources Management Research, in Mandan, ND.

The mission of the Natural Resources Management Research lab is to develop adaptive and integrative practices for sustainable, crop, livestock, and rangeland systems.

Responsibilities

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies livestock and plant samples and supporting records; maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources.

Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory and field, and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological).
Assists in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties in a laboratory and field environment.
Keeps detailed records of experimental data.
Maintains, calibrates and modifies equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
Utilizes in-vitro digestion, nitrogen analysis and fiber equipment for the study of livestock.
Operates tractors, hay swathers and balers in the field.

Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.

At the GS-05:

Qualifying experience for the GS-05 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in the conduct of animal, zoology or livestock science research studies by collecting and preparing animal and plant related samples and data; and experience compiling and maintaining research results and data using automated systems.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelors degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to animal science or zoology . Related courses include general animal (livestock) science and management, animal nutrition, animal physiology, animal breeding or animal genetics.

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At the GS-06:

Qualifying experience for GS-6 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting and measuring animal and plant related samples in a field or laboratory environment in support of an animal, zoology or livestock science research study; preparing samples for research purposes using laboratory equipment; and maintaining and compiling research data using computer software.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include animal focused degrees such as animal (livestock) science or zoology.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.
