You will perform a full range of meat grading and quality assurance monitoring duties in different locations.

The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Examines meat to evaluate factors related to product quality

  • Selects samples and meat products within specifications

  • Explains evaluation determinations to plant management

  • Prepares and issues certificates based on quality standards

  • Assists supervisors with on-the-job training of meat graders and other employees

Travel Required
25% or less - Travel for training and work assignments may be required.

Special Conditions:

  • Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successfully adjudicated FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check) and a background investigation

  • Locality pay will vary based upon the selectee's duty location. A final salary determination will be made upon selection.

  • Ability to work in an environment that has cold temperatures between 25-30 degrees, high noise levels, slippery surfaces, and safety risks near cutting and sawing equipment.

  • You will be required to lift up to 50 pounds and stand, walk, lift, bend and stoop for long periods of time. Physical coordination and finger dexterity in both hands, healthy eyesight for color, distance, and depth perception, and the ability to use other senses for touch, taste, smell, etc.

  • Selectee will be subject to a pre-employment medical statement and/or examination.

  • Successful completion of a 1 year probationary period (if new hire to the Federal service).


Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience as defined below, etc.

TIME IN GRADE: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

FOR THE GS-05 LEVEL: Applicants must have three years of progressively responsible experience, one year of which was equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to the next lower level in the Federal Service (equivalent to the GS-04 level) (experience may have been obtained in private or public sectors), that demonstrates the ability to:

  • Analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions.

  • Plan and organize work.

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

OR have a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

FOR THE GS-07 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 level) that demonstrates:

  • Experience grading any agricultural products and/or inspecting, storing, packaging, transporting, and processing conditions.

  • Experience grading and inspection of meat or poultry products for standards and contract specifications to grade such products and identify and describe common product defects and to establish their causes.

  • Identifying and determining the cause of common defects of these products or product types.

  • Recognizing, identifying, and describing common product characteristics relevant to the products graded and skill in comparing the characteristics to standards or contract specifications.

OR 1 full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree in Animal Science, Meat Science, Agronomy, Agriculture, Botany, or Economics;

OR Superior Academic Achievement: To qualify based on superior academic achievement, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution AND must meet certain GPA requirements. For more details click: Superior Academic Achievement

FOR THE GS-09 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience of hands- on grading experience in the commodity of Meat (equivalent to the GS-07 level) that demonstrates:

  • Independently grades and/or inspects meat products and performs difficult assignments such as: grading and/or inspecting rare or unusual products or product types; regularly making borderline grading decisions on a variety of products; or applying the full range of grading skills and knowledge at an extremely fast pace requiring instant determinations.

OR Masters or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in the field of Animal Science, Meat Science, Agronomy, Agricultural, Botany and Economics. OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.B. or J.D., if related.

TRANSCRIPTS are required if:

  • You are qualifying for the position based on education.

  • You are qualifying for this position based on a combination of experience and education.

  • You are qualifying for this position based on Superior Academic Achievement.

  • This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-05/07/09 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level. Job Summary: Position will provide operational and administrative support to the Bank's Agricultural Valuation Services Group. The Group performs analysis and evaluations of complex agribusiness operations in support of commercial lending transactions. You will assist with processing and monitoring valuation assignments, and act as a liaison for the team between customers, Bank officer, and vendors. Major Responsibilities: * Responsible for the administration of valuation assignments through the use of electronic vendor management systems. * Process and oversee all new requests within assigned region. * Monitor the completion of request forms, assignment of projects, and distribution of appropriate background materials to vendors and maintains/updates electronic vendor management system. * Set up assignment files, including, assignment request, supporting data, and due dates. * Respond to third-party inquiries, including inquiries from Bank officers, vendors and customers as to status of assignments. * Monitor assignment status to insure completion in a timely manner. * Process completed assignments. Upon completion, forwards the completed assignment to the requesting Bank office via electronic transmission or other appropriate method. * Prepare and file assignments containing all relevant information for retrieval. * Prepare and process all appropriate accounts payable forms to insure payment of assignment expenses. * Compile and maintain assignment files. Arrange files in accordance with policies and procedures.
