AFVN Stetson University AmeriCorps VISTA D & I Coordinator
The primary goal of this project is to increase college access, retention, and success for minoritized student populations (BIPOC, first-generation, Pell-eligible, LGBTQ+, and veterans) at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. Retention rates for Black students are nearly 10 percent lower than White students (66.58% vs. 76.40% in 2020-21), and rates for Pell-eligible students are more than 10 percent lower than those who are not Pell-eligible (62.3% vs. 73.9% in 2020-2021), as reported by Stetson's Office of Institutional Research.
By employing high-impact practices (targeted recruitment, training, cohort development, and internship support) that have been utilized to great success by our Bonner Program (which boasts a historical graduation rate of 95%), we intend to recruit students from these lower-retention populations into these retention-increasing programs and thereby increase these students' college access, retention, and success rates. The secondary goal of this project is to reduce long-term poverty in the historically Black community of Spring Hill, a neighborhood in southwestern DeLand that, as of 2021, has a poverty rate more than triple the county as a whole (37.4% vs. 11.6%) and median income one-third less than the county as a whole ($21,633 vs. $35,219). Poverty will be reduced through the community-engaged learning nonprofit internships held by students who are members of the programs developed by the VISTA. The AmeriCorps VISTA Diversity & Inclusion College Access & Success Coordinator will work closely with Stetson's Office of Religious & Spiritual Life to develop a program to recruit, train, and create internships for students from minoritized populations who are interested in diversity and inclusivity.
