Position Summary - Berkeley Afterschool Director of Program Experience


  • Monitor attendance and follow up with staff and parents to make sure that all children are properly accounted for. Make sure all attendance documentation is accurate and accessible

  • Supervise children during intake periods

  • "Float' during enrichment activities to assist staff and children where needed.

  • Work with staff to set goals and understand the expectations of the program and their specific position.

  • Strategize and implement mechanisms for staff and students to build appropriate and transformative connections

  • Ensure licensed teacher to student ratios

  • Work collaboratively with co-director to oversee and update annual budget and monthly variance reports.

  • In partnership with co-director interview, hire and evaluate staff

  • Organize and plan staff trainings

  • Organizing and cleaning office and kid spaces

  • In partnership with co-director address student behavioral issues or special needs and implement appropriate behavior management strategies

  • Plan and participate in and attend Center holiday and other events

Parent Engagement:

  • Schedule and conduct tours for all incoming families

  • Engage with parents on a daily basis, by greeting them in person or reaching/responding by email or telephone

  • Work with the Director of Program Operations to ensure all families have opted into the SMS texting system. Update on a monthly basis.

  • Update enrollment numbers and waitlist accuracy monthly and communicate with all necessary stakeholders (parents, finance, marketing)

  • Create opportunities for parent community to come together


  • Work with the JCC Controller to make sure all on-boarding paperwork is in place

  • Coordinate staff breaks, vacations and find substitutes for staff absences

  • Take notes and create action items from staff meetings

  • Oversee timesheet and proper reporting of hours

Licensing and Forms:

  • Monitor location and proper use and storage of daily student attendance sheets and binders

  • Create, implement, and maintain proper registration documentation, including child and staff lincing files.

  • Create emergency binders, Sign In/Out sheets, Authorized Pick Up list, Master Roster, Transportation, Allergies list

  • Update LIC. 500 and LIC 9040


  • Coordinate child attendance schedules and sheets and child pick-ups (walking and vehicle transportation)

  • Work with Director of Program operations to make sure vehicles are safe and properly maintenanced

  • Make sure all drivers have been submitted to and cleared by the JCC's insurance

Enrichment Classes (Chugim):

  • Work with staff to produce high quality enrichment classes

  • Create enrichment class grids or schedules for families in advance of enrichment registration

  • Manage enrichment classes registration and make necessary changes to class schedules.

  • Monitor enrichment classes and provide feedback and support to instructors

  • Monitor enrichment budget

  • Vendor Contracts & monitoring correct payments

  • Point person for end of session family enrichment night

School's Out:

  • Organize and staff all School's Out Programming (including scheduling field trips, onsite programming, and scheduling of all staff)
  • Manage School's Out budget and report monthly variances


  • Draft letters and create other parent communications as needed.

  • Produce content for weekly parent newsletter

  • Work with Marketing to produce program collateral and proper advertisement at schools and related communities

  • Work with marketing to order JCC/Afterschool merchandise.


  • Monitor and order food/supplies for Afterschool program.

  • Monitoring and updating facility needs relating to afterschool program.

  • Update and calendar out the incoming school year (create family/community events, child activities for Jewish holidays, etc.) over the summer.

  • Assisting in Specialty Camp at the Berkeley site.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required and Essential (E) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle (e.g. car, minivan, etc.) (E)

  • Ability to read and speak fluently in the English language (E)

  • Knowledge of and ability to accurately apply basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions) related to work needs; familiarity with metric and non-metric measures (E)

  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods while walking students to and from various locations and performing other duties throughout the work day (E)

  • Ability to run or walk rapidly in an emergency (E)

  • Ability to respond without delay to needs of young children (E)

  • Ability to sit on floors and chairs, getting up and down quickly (E)

  • Ability to bend from knees and waist to help a child with clothing, shoes or other needs. (E)

  • Ability to maneuver in confined lavatories to aid children with toilet needs (E)

  • Ability to have child lean on staff member as necessary. Ability to reach to elevated shelves, including standing on step ladder, and retrieve items by hand (E)

  • Ability to apply pressure directly by hand and using mops, brooms and other implements (E)

  • Knowledge of and ability to use a Personal Computers and common office software including the Microsoft Office Suite and other common electronic applications (e.g. Gmail, Google Calendar, Google search, etc.).

  • Ability to organize tasks, develop plans, and implement plans to efficiently meet organizational goals

  • Ability to work effectively in a group task force or other team setting

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Class C California Driver's License
  • BA or BS degree in education, child psychology, or other job related field
  • 12 Early Childhood Education Units preferred

VIEW JOBS 3/14/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-06-12T00:00 The Camp Director has the overall responsibility for the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of all vacation and summer camp programs. The Camp Director will play an integral role in creating a new vision for our camp programs, being an agent for change and positive growth. The Camp Director must be a self-starter, capable of working independently and also as part of a team of professionals. The Camp Director must be capable of "switching gears" - being approachable and fun when working with parents, while also being organized and professional when in the office. Essential Job Functions: * Creating a dynamic vision for a cohesive day camp program centered around the JCC facility, including traditional and specialty camp offerings. * Grow total camper enrollment and departmental revenue through enhanced marketing, outreach, relationship-building, programming, and recruitment. * Supervising camp leadership staff and administrative staff. * Hire, recruit, interview and evaluate camp staff. * Plan and execute staff orientation and ongoing training, scheduling staff and leading staff meetings * Plan all programmatic aspects of camp, such as field trips, special days, activity areas and Shabbat. * Being responsible for all aspects of camper safety. * Act as the primary liaison with parents. * Maintain rooms and spaces inside and outside the building utilized by camp and coordinating facility usage with building services staff. * Ensuring that camp operations are in line with American Camp Association standards. * Building relationships with parents, schools, and community leaders. * Lead the JCC's year-round Vacation Camp program, which operates on days when area schools are closed. This includes staffing, scheduling of activities, registration, supplies and snacks and anything else pertinent to a successful program * Planning and assisting with special camp events throughout the year, agency-wide events, and community-wide programs. * Attending and participating in monthly staff meetings and weekly supervisory meetings. * Working with the marketing department regarding publicity, public relations and marketing plans for camp programs. * Model appropriate behavior to staff and campers. * Provide behavior management techniques and intervention for campers where necessary * Create a culture of trust and feedback. * Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications: * Must be a college graduate. * Minimum of 5 years working in camp, or camp-like setting. * Previous teaching and leadership experience preferred. * Ability to teach skills to other staff members and campers of all ages. * Strong communication and problem-solving skills. * Experience communicating and working with families with children of varying abilities. * Ability to remain calm and maintain perspective under pressure. * Commitment to work collaboratively with others. * Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing needs. * Much be energetic, enthusiastic and demonstrate and desire to go the extra mile. Status: Full-time, Mondays through Fridays (with additional weekend requirements for promotion/marketing as needed), including organizing and facilitating 40-45 hours of staff training in May & June.
