Our part time After School Chess and Sports Instructors lead children in grades K-5 through pre-packaged lessons teaching basic chess skills and running drills, plays, and games.

Instructors should be looking for part time work, enjoy working with children and have reliable transportation.


This is a part time job. Teachers typically work 3-5 hours per week, in one hour per day blocks. Schedules are flexible.


  • We are primarily interested in dynamic personalities who want to make a difference in a child's day.

  • Experience working with children is preferred.

  • Experience examples include: youth summer camps, youth coaching, Sunday School instruction, baby sitting, having children of your own, etc.

  • Chess instructors must have a basic understanding of the game.


  • Instructors are given all the supplies they need to flourish in an after school setting. Supplies typically are one medium to large suitcase and one small duffel bag of materials. Supplies vary depending on subject and course.

  • Paid training includes an orientation of our policies and procedures as well as class specific training.

  • Training pay rate is $10 per hour.

{YEL!} Instructors will have the following responsibilities:

  • Be EARLY - Instructors are required and paid to arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled class time.

  • Be PREPARED - {YEL!} provides pre-packaged lessons. Instructors prepare for each lesson.

  • Be SAFE - {YEL!} instructors follow our safety guidelines as well as school safety guidelines.


  • A smile and a healthy dose of enthusiasm go a long way.
  • Be ENGAGING - {YEL!} instructors engage students to THINK, LEARN and PLAY WELL each and every class.

{YEL!} Instructors must possess the following qualifications:

  • Availability during weekday after school hours (4:00 -6:30PM).

  • A reliable vehicle.

  • A valid Drivers License and ability to transport and store supplies needed to teach class.

  • A sincere desire to make a big impact on children's lives.

  • Ability to organize and implement pre-packaged lesson plans.

Note: Teachers often teach more than one subject. Our busiest teachers teach multiple subjects.

Offer your time and talent as a tutor and be more for these students. As a Math Tutor, you'll help struggling students in grades 4-8 to improve their skills and get on track with math. With great training and onsite coaching, we'll prepare you to work with pairs of students to build fundamental math skills and confidence. Students make the most progress when you are there, so our tutors serve during school hours and are needed for the whole school year. We are currently recruiting for the 2019-20 school year. Tutors have the option of beginning in August 2019, September 2019, October 2019 or January 2020. This is an AmeriCorps member position with Minnesota Math Corps. Although the earnings are modest, the rewards are great! You'll join an amazing group of more than 1,500 Minnesota tutors, determined to help students be more. What to Expect * Be a change maker by providing math help to pairs of students during school hours. * Be the reason struggling students build their confidence and skills. * Be ready to grow by participating in on-site coaching sessions two times per month to review student progress and get feedback. * Be impactful by participating in training and ongoing professional development. * Be the motivation and represent Math Corps at school-sponsored activities (e.g., family night) to help build awareness of Math Corps. * Be an ambassador of the program by sharing your experience with the wider community. Perks as a Tutor Give your time as a tutor and you'll receive a scalable perks package based on your time commitment of 35, 25, or 18 hours per week. Whether you are 18 or 85, the most important qualification is a desire to help children succeed. That said, you also need to meet the following minimum qualifications by the time you begin your service. * Are dependable and have a history of good attendance * Able to understand and follow instructions * Can set a pace and maintain a schedule with students * Have basic computer skills (like email and navigating online systems) * Can speak, read, and write English fluently * 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent * A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States* * Have served three or fewer terms with AmeriCorps State or National Program * Agree to and successfully complete a background check * Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
