Aerospace Engineer

Key Role:

Shape the development of next generation energy technologies that increase efficiency or reduce emissions by leading the design of government R&D programs and evaluation of novel technology concepts as an aerospace engineer on our team. Broaden your skill set into areas, including wind turbine design and optimization, controls engineering, and offshore engineering and apply knowledge of energy market considerations. Grow your skills by merging aerospace engineering, controls engineering, and systems engineering to create next generation energy technology programs, including electric aviation, wind, and marine hydrokinetic energy systems. Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience with postdoctoral, academic, or industry roles pertaining to the design or optimization of aerospace systems, including wind turbines or related aerospace systems, such as helicopters and rotor design

  • Ability to perform domestic travel between 10% - 15% of the time

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance

  • PhD degree

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience with wind modeling and simulation software

  • Experience with wind and water tunnel experimentation for validation of aerospace systems, including extrapolation of results to full scale

  • Experience with researching controls engineering, including applications involving non-linear, coupled dynamics, such as aero-, hydro-, elastic-, and servo-dynamics

  • Experience with MATLAB or Simulink and their modeling, identification, and control toolboxes

  • Experience with the design, optimization, or control of marine propulsion systems, including propellers

  • Experience in a consulting environment preferred

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Ability to exhibit flexibility and adaptability and work in a collaborative team environment

  • Ability to be a proactive problem solver and work independently

  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively

  • Possession of excellent client service, organizational, analytical, and time management skills

  • Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills

  • PhD degree in Aerospace Engineering, ME, or a related engineering field

We are looking for someone with experience as a helicopter pilot and experience in engineering. What You'll Get to Do: * Assist government design teams with integrating aviation systems into existing and future ship designs on aviation capable ships. * Design aviation maintenance facilities to support existing and developmental aircraft on existing and new construction programs. * Provide engineering services support to including Spec writing, design, outfitting design, marine drawing and work item development, selected record drawing (SRD) updates, ship checks and other technical work document preparation in accordance with drawing standards and good marine design practice. * Generate CAD drawings for use in aviation systems and outfitting. * Draft detailed multi-view drawings of aviation facilities and systems. * Learn Drafting Standards and apply knowledge and re-use. * Review 3D CAD files to ensure shipbuilder compliance with specifications and standards. * Provide insight into the practical operation and maintenance of aircraft on USN, USCG and MSC ships. * Coordinate changes to aviation facilities with appropriate NAVAIR codes to ensure that the existing or new facilities fully support the requirements of each ship's operational environment. You'll Bring These Qualifications: * BS Engineering * Experience as a helicopter pilot on US Navy ships (5-8 years). * Ability to write clear reports and specifications in English * Ability to write white and point papers with minimal oversight. * Ability to interface with team members, technical leads and Project Managers * Ability to work alone on individual projects with minimal supervision and with other Engineering Disciplines on a team * Proficient with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint * Good verbal (English) communication skills * Willingness to travel ≤10% of the time * U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain a Secret Security Clearance These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have: * Active Secret Security Clearance * Have operational experience operating from multiple USN, USCG and MSC ships. * A thorough understanding of shipboard aviation operations. * Ability to read and interpret Department of Defense, Department of the Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and Military Sealift Command instructions and military standards.
