Solano Community College is seeking a pool of qualified applicants for possible temporary part-time teaching assignments.   These positions are filled on an as needed basis and are on-going recruitments. Assignments may include day, evening and weekend courses. The district may cancel classes or change instructors as enrollment needs are determined.

The position is under the general supervision of the Dean of Applied Technology & Business. The selected candidate will be teaching in the Aircraft Maintenance, Power Plant Maintenance, and Avionics areas preparing students for certification by the Federal/Aviation Administration.

Teaching assignments may include evening and weekend hours, and off-campus instruction in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and College and School policies

The program is located at the Nut Tree Airport in Vacaville, CA.

  • Provide instruction in accordance with established program course outlines of record; inform/advise students about program requirements; evaluate and provide timely verbal and written assessments of student performance; prepare and grade assignments and examinations; meet administrative timelines and submit completed reports and required documents; and maintain required student attendance, scholastic records, and other related materials.

  • To be a contributing team member of the Solano Community College faculty, and to help build and maintain a quality aviation training program at the College.

  • Support students' academic success by maintaining regular office hours, advising students, and providing service to students with special needs.

  • Use technology in the academic environment to enhance student learning

  • Participate in college-wide committee work and collegial governance.

  • Maintain current knowledge and skills in the areas of assignment.

  • Maintain effective communication with peers, staff, students, and administrators.

  • Assist with program recruitment, including traveling to high schools, career fairs, etc.

  • Evaluate, develop, or modify curriculum to reflect current standards of aviation.

  • Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college-wide and department assessment, student matters, and/or college related concerns.

  • Work effectively with colleagues and students and be a contributing member of the  

  • campus community; 

  • Maintain positive and effective communications with students, faculty, administration, and staff.

  • Work effectively with industry leaders in both management and labor.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and development.

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic,    cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

  • Perform other duties as assigned which may include but not be limited to:

  • Operate an Aeronautics lab to provide reinforcement of instruction of the processes, techniques and equipment used in the field; maintain equipment, assuring good working order and availability for student use.

  • Control the circulation of supplies, materials and equipment to students and instructors by checking items in and out, maintaining appropriate records and inventories and ordering replacement items as necessary according to approved procedures.

  • Provide administrative and technical information and assistance to students, instructors and the public about Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) regulations and requirements; assist with FAA examinations by proctoring and grading exams.

  • Maintain and control the Hazardous Materials program and arrange for disposal per the district guidelines.  Be proficient in the operation of an be certified to operate a forklift in confined spaces.  Be proficient and experienced in the ground operation of GA aircraft and engines on test cells.

  • Prepare student files, and administrative/curriculum manuals for FAA inspections; work closely with students to keep their files current and to assist students with supplies for their lab work; evaluate student files for graduation; monitor and post timecards, exams and required FAA background data; assure that appropriate safety procedures are observed by students.

  • Train and provide work direction to student workers when conducting tool room inventory, general office work or other assigned duties.

  • Propose expenditures for the lab budget; assist in evaluating and selecting tools, equipment, supplies and materials for purchase; contact vendors for information and demonstrations of new or updated products; monitor expenditures of budgeted funds.

  • Order, receive, catalog, inventory and store supplies and equipment; maintain inventory records and assure adequate levels of supplies, including FAA materials such as administrative forms, exams and books; report FAA monthly exam counts.

  • Perform routine service and repairs to aircraft and equipment used in the hangar for instruction.

  • Perform clerical duties including data entry and filing; answer telephone inquiries; maintain records and files related to lab activity, student attendance and progress, correspondence, purchase requisitions, invoices, parts lists, material safety data sheets, inventory and equipment maintenance and repair.

Any bachelor's degree AND two years of full time experience in Aeronautics, Airframe and Power plant, Aircraft Mechanics, Aeronautical Engineering Technician, Avionics

OR Any Associate's degree AND six years of full time experience in Aeronautics, Airframe and Power plant, Aircraft Mechanics, Aeronautics Engineering Technician, Avionics OR the equivalent.

The desired qualifications include FAA instructor certification with teaching methodologies and strategies. Extensive industry experience is desired, as well as knowledge of curriculum development, team building and outreach/marketing. If you do not possess the minimum qualifications exactly as stated above you must request an equivalency review and submit conclusive supporting documents at the time of application.   • Demonstrate ability to utilize multiple teaching methods/strategies needed to address the diverse learning styles/need of students including integration of interactive technologies to enhance critical thinking, clinical reasoning and problem-solving strategies;

  • Possess a commitment to teaching and learning, and provide a supportive learning environment to enhance student success and completion;

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to teach students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, including the disabled, who may have wide ranges of abilities;

  • Competency with computers and other technological aids, and a willingness to stay current with new technologies, especially ones that could benefit the program;

  • Commitment to stay current with scholarship and development in field of expertise; 

  • Willingness to participate in recruitment and articulation with area schools;

  • Possess a willingness to take initiative in co-curricular activities, special events, and School projects;

  • Possess a willingness to participate in shared/participatory governance of the Division and the College;

  • Demonstrate the ability to self-evaluate and effect change for personal growth and improvement; to accept constructive feedback and effect change appropriately; and participate in professional growth, development activities, and lifelong learning
