Overview

The Advocate Counselor provides individual and group counseling, case management, advocacy, referrals and crisis intervention to older adolescents in YABC Program and assists in implementing other aspects of the program in close collaboration with agency and school personnel.

Reports to: PROGRAM DIRECTOR, YABC AT COLUMBUS HIGH SCHOOL

Location: 925 Astor Avenue, Bronx, New York 10469

Hours: 35 Hours/Week; Non-Exempt

Major Duties:

  • Provide case management for students identified as in need of supportive services.

  • Provide individual and group counseling.

  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.

  • Provide family outreach and involvement as appropriate.

  • Develop and implement workshops responsive to student needs.

  • Assist students in attending school regularly through identifying obstacles and connecting with resources; attendance outreach including home visits.

  • Assist in carrying out other aspects of the program including planning trips, celebrations, and leadership activities.

  • Support students with all aspects of the college preparation process including applications, financial aid, personal essay, and college visits.

  • Function as an active member of Good Shepherd Services and school teams.

  • Perform statistical, narrative, and record keeping duties as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Must have experience working with adolescent/young adults individually and in groups.

  • Bi-lingual Spanish/English preferred.

  • Prior experience in a school setting helpful.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must have a commitment to work from a strength based and/or youth development perspective.

Through this partnership, the students are able to earn college credits toward their associate degree while earning a high school diploma. As part of this educational experience, the liaison works with the college faculty and staff to develop non-credit bearing programs and events to support this goal. Working together with the college and school personnel, the liaison seeks to maintain and develop collaborations that serve to better prepare students for college and careers while fostering mutual learning among the faculty, staff, and students at the partnering institutions. The liaison is instrumental in facilitating students' progress and success by ensuring that appropriate collaborative support mechanisms are in place, so it is highly recommended that this person have experience working with both high school students and adults (i.e. professors, teachers, parents and school leadership). The ability to develop strong working relationships needs to be combined with strong organizational skills around the various administrative responsibilities. Reporting to the Director of School-College Partnerships, the successful candidate will perform the following duties in addition to those in the overview: * Serves as a liaison between Hostos Community College and HERO High School in all areas of communication and logistics. * Assesses student progress in pre-college and college classes, including ongoing coordination with students, school leaders, professors, and high school instructors. * Recommends and arranges student academic support services for students in college courses including tutoring. * Convenes and participates in regular planning meetings with college and school staff that focuses primarily on the ongoing development of the scope and sequence of the school, the development of early college partnership activities and curriculum development. * Manages the admissions and enrollment processes for college courses; communicates with professors and high school instructors to monitor progress. * Assists the school in monitoring and evaluating program data, as well as data from the city and state examinations, to assess student progress and to make recommendations to improve student achievement in order to fulfill the early college mission. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's Degree and four years' relevant experience required.
