Advisory Services & Blended Finance Team - Climate Change Consultant

The Investment Operations Department (INO) of IDB Invest is responsible for generating a portfolio of high quality, creditworthy, and environmentally and socially sound projects that result in significant development impact. The business cycle goes from the identification, selection, origination and execution of transactions to their monitoring. INO follows a matrix model, with three Segment Divisions covering Infrastructure and Energy, Financial Institutions and Corporates, and three transversal areas such as the Financial Products and Services Division (in charge of capital market solutions, financing solutions for funds, equity and trade and supply chain finance), the Advisory Services and Blended Finance Team and the Portfolio Management Division.

The Team: The goal of the Advisory Services & Blended Finance Team (INO/NFP), which is part of the INO Department, is to generate sustainable projects with significant development impact from the prospecting stage through closing and monitoring.

The Advisory Services & Blended Finance Team works closely with INO's Segment Divisions to prepare impactful projects, mainstreaming sustainability considerations, supporting champions in specific sectors through knowledge products and outreach activities, and influencing the market through publications, conferences and other activities. The Team also manages third party funds for blended finance solutions.

What you'll do:

The Consultant will be responsible for supporting the delivery of the IDBG's mandate to promote economic and social development through the private sector going forward utilizing Climate funds. One of such funds is the IDB-INVEST Nordic Development Fund (NDF) Trust Fund, aiming at financing non-reimbursable technical assistance and other activities in support of activities of technical or operational nature related to project development about IDB Invest strategic programs and consistent with IDB Invest's Business Plan.

  • Write terms of reference, follow administrative processes and review reports from climate advisory services that are provided to financial institutions, corporates or relevant infrastructure sectors.

  • Participate in studies on appropriate technologies, where sector specific studies are needed to build the business models or identify more competitive/climate smart investments.

  • Manage appraisals on cost benefit analysis, feasibility studies, market studies, quantification of environmental benefits, and others relevant for successful climate investments.

  • Support climate business model assessments of certain corporates, or financial institutions, or at the sector/subsector level.

  • Support the monitoring and reporting of the climate projects results with financial institutions, corporates and communications to donor.

  • Support the Advisory services and segments teams on building a comprehensive work agenda with priority sectors/subsectors for climate implementation and finance in the relevant region.

  • Support the generation of knowledge products as needed to facilitate implementation of the NDF program (and analogous funds or other climate related initiatives).

  • Support the organization and logistics to held conferences and workshops with financial institutions, corporates, and priority sectors.

Skills you'll need:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Environmental or Sustainable Development or a related discipline. An advanced degree (Master's or MBA) is preferred.

Experience: At least three (3) years of professional experience in the execution and management of operations, including experience related to development and climate change.

Languages: Oral and written proficiency in English and Spanish is required; knowledge of Portuguese or French is a plus.

  • Excellent communication skills, including written and oral forms.

  • Proven ability to communicate complex concepts and prepare reports that are clear, concise and meaningful

  • Ability to develop, analyze and articulate project issues and identify creative, practical approaches to overcome challenging situations

  • Analytic capacity and ability to assess project outputs and relevant findings.

  • Good team player, self-starter, ability to work under limited supervision and maintain good relationships internally and externally.

At the Blended Finance Team, the selected candidate will participate to the deployment of IDB Invest's US$ 800 million of concessional donors' funds towards highly additional and catalytic projects where actual or perceived risks are too high for commercial finance alone. These resources are primarily applied towards gender equality, low-carbon and climate resilient investments across our priority sectors. The team works as a cross-cutting product group providing comprehensive blended finance solutions combining donors' concessional resources with IDB Invest own commercial funding through a wide array of financial products, including debt, equity, risk mitigation instruments and financial incentives. What you'll do: You will manage a portfolio of concessional resources ("Funds"): * Validate investments match with Funds' investment criteria and provide advice to improve project design and alignment with Funds' objectives; * Track the Funds' portfolio of investments, monitoring its impact and financial performance in liaison with the portfolio management and development effectiveness teams; * Contribute and/or write internal monitoring and evaluation reports required under the Funds.
