Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, or related field with appropriate experience; master's degree preferred.

  • Must be characterized, above all else, by a genuine desire to work with college students to assist them in reaching healthy resolutions to various problems and concerns which directly impact the personal and academic success and development of the student.

  • Familiar with Student Support Services mission and services.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the needs of students from disadvantaged backgrounds and knowledge of issues affecting their academic potential.

  • Ability to express oneself effectively in written and oral communications and the ability to present information in one-on-one and small/large group situations.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Basic computer skills.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience working with TRiO programs.

  • Experience in educational programs at the college/university level for at-risk students including first generation, low income, ethnically diverse or those with disabilities.

  • Experience working with faculty in a college/university environment.

  • Understanding of and experience complying with SSS TRIO related regulations.

  • Prior teaching and advising experience in high school, college and/or private sector.

  • Knowledge of postsecondary academic and financial assistance procedures.

  • Identify and recruit students for Student Support Services TRIO program based on eligibility and academic need.

  • Assist students in developing educational plans that align with interests, skills, abilities, and lifestyle goals.

  • Provide individual and group advisement including, but not limited to academic advising, financial literacy education, academic skills and study strategies, career exploration, and personal support.

  • Assist students with applying for and obtaining educational funds.

  • Assist students in applying for admission to Graduate School and obtaining Federal student aid.

  • Monitor students' progress and modify services as needed to benefit students.

  • Maintain confidential record system; manage student files, documentation, appointments, etc. to meet university, state, and federal requirements.

  • Provide referrals to other services when appropriate so as not to duplicate SSS services.

  • Schedule, plan and conduct group workshops.

  • Develop and maintain relevancy of curriculum for ACSK1010; teach two designated SSS courses.

  • Supervise the hiring, training, and management of tutors and tutorial services for Student Support Services (SSS) and CONSAH participants.

  • Assist in the annual Faculty Advisory Board activities.

  • Assist in the maintenance of accurate SSS data to generate monthly/quarterly/annual reports and evaluate the performance of participants.

  • Assist in the preparation of Annual Performance Reports.

  • Serve as a liaison to university departments; and conduct SSS informational presentations.

  • Develop and maintain a network of educational, financial, and career resources for the benefit of the program and participants.

  • Serve as Disability Support liaison for CONSAH; proctor exams for Disability Support students.

  • Contact area elementary, middle, and high school personnel to schedule STEM events.

  • Periodic travel to Alexandria, Leesville, Shreveport and/or main campus required.

  • Initiate activities related to the establishment of a HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) chapter at Northwestern. Coordinate HOSA activities with HOSA state organization, area high schools, and NSU Departments once chapter is established.

  • Serve on university and CONSAH committees as assigned

  • Position requires working some evenings, weekends, and overnight.

  • Perform other teaching and advising duties as assigned
