Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the heart of Hampton Roads, a region renowned for being the birthplace of America and home to communities rich in culture and industry. Bordering the Chesapeake Bay, the region boasts beaches, major attractions, world-class museums, and a vibrant visual and performing arts scene. The area is known for its economic vitality, which includes being home to several military bases, ship building facilities, the NASA Langley Research Center and Jefferson Lab, major colleges and universities, and varied commercial industries and enterprises.
VPCC is a comprehensive community college, offering a variety of programs of study leading to an associate's degree, certificate, or career studies certificate. In addition to the many popular transfer degree programs, the college is known for its strong career & technical programs and its outreach to the community as a partner and leader in workforce development.
Founded in 1967, VPCC serves over 8,500 students each year in credit instruction and over 2,500 in non-credit instruction and workforce services. The College is served by over 80 full time faculty, 200 adjunct faculty, and 150 staff members. Faculty and staff are strategic and responsive, committed to understanding and meeting the needs of the region.
The College has two campuses, one in Hampton and the Historic Triangle Campus located in Williamsburg. The College also has a satellite site at the Southeast Higher Education Center in Newport News. The communities served by the College are the Cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the Counties of James City and York.
The Position:
The Student Services Advisor is responsible for providing educational guidance and assistance with enrollment, financial assistance, and retention and transition functions. Advises prospective and new students on programs, policies, and procedures. Assists students in defining personal and educational career goals, develops prevention and intervention strategies; provides case management; monitors student progress; and refers students to appropriate internal and external resources. And performs other duties as assigned.
This is a full-time restricted classified position. Continuation of employment is based on funding availability.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Required:
Experience in case management.
Experience in a college setting in an advising or student services capacity.
Significant experience in Workforce Development, Career Services.
Knowledge:
Familiar with academic disciplines, curriculums, programs, requirements, policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.
Working knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
Knowledge of best practices in academic advising, student development and student learning outcomes.
Extensive knowledge of employment and training programs and other workforce development initiatives.
Familiar with record keeping procedures.
Knowledge of PeopleSoft, Navigate, and other educational technologies.
Skills:
Highly effective written and verbal communication skills.
Interpersonal, group facilitation and presentation skills.
Excellent attention to detail and a high degree of organization.
Ability to:
Interpret and administer federal and state policies and procedures.
Maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and the public.
Work effectively within an ethnic, cultural, and socially diverse student population in addition to having the ability to employ the interpersonal skills needed to facilitate a student-centered, inclusive, and culturally sensitive advising rapport that effectively meets students' needs and that is tailored to their interests and goals.
Develop inclusive and ethical practices consistent with program and population needs that promote learning, student development, progress, and success.
Ability to conduct detailed analysis of program issues and concerns and makes recommendations as appropriate while exercising decision making, judgment and discretion.
Analyze and evaluate procedures and work methods and to exercise appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and work methods.
Function independently and assume full responsibility for the delivery of student services and referrals to other partner services and/or agencies.
Ability to display leadership qualities and characteristics necessary for developing effective working relationships with students/customers, partner agencies, partner staff and other community individuals and groups.
Ability to provide services to prospective students including non-credit training preparedness, academic advising, registration and enrollment, counseling and possibly student activities.
