3M is seeking an Advanced Research Engineer for the Specialty Film & Polymer Processing Group in the Corporate Research Process Lab (CRPL), located in Maplewood, MN. At 3M, you can apply your talent in bold ways that matter. Here, you go.
The person hired for this position will work on a cross-functional, team-based, collaborative environment, and the candidate will be expected to develop innovative technologies that will enable continuous processing of polymers on web substrates. It is expected that this person will apply broad knowledge to address variations in work conditions and operations while maintaining safety at all times. This will involve equipment operations from lab scale to pilot scale, while requiring a high degree of mechanical aptitude to execute their responsibilities. This position offers a chance to be at the forefront of manufacturing process technologies and future film/adhesive based products.
This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military environments to a 3M career.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Working with 3M safety and environmental team to ensure that all extrusion processes and equipment are compliant with internal and external regulations.
Operation of polymer processing equipment.
Facilitating and supporting setting up equipment prior to experiments in conjunction with technician(s), including monitoring of process parameters and troubleshooting problems during the run.
Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data from experiments as well as documenting results, preparing reports, and presenting work
Scheduling and prioritizing experimental runs for new products or process technologies.
Participating in NTI and NPI programs in partnership with other CRL labs and corporate divisions.
Proactively communicating project direction and status to appropriate personnel.
Performing literature and patent searches, scout for new technologies and actively develop intellectual property.
Other duties as assigned.
Possess a Bachelor's degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Polymer Science/Engineering from an accredited institution
Minimum of one (1) year polymer processing or extrusion experience
Mechanical aptitude and hands-on skills working with equipment or machinery
Experience with safe lab practices and a continuous improvement methodology
Leadership and networking skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
Previous or current 3M Internship, Co-Op or Tech Aide experience
Internship or other lab experience working with polymeric materials, including synthesis, processing, or application development
Excellent problem solving, analytical, and organizational skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Self-motivated and self-driven
Location: Maplewood, Minnesota
Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international
Relocation: Is not authorized
Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without a sponsorship for employment visa status (e.e. H1B status).
