Responsibilities*
To provide direct pain specialty health care to patients and families on the Adult Acute Pain Service team. This position involves a significant level of autonomy in decision-making within the scope of responsibilities but will also require collaboration with a multidisciplinary inpatient pain team including the acute pain service pharmacist, residents, fellows, and faculty. Exercise autonomy in medical decision-making and provide a range of therapeutic services to adult patients with various painful conditions. This will include managing patients with complex, acute, subacute, and chronic pain conditions, including, but not limited to, postoperative care, post trauma care, end-of-life and palliative care, and pain management in patients with a history of substance use disorder. Collects and assists in the interpretation of reports from diagnostic and laboratory tests, radiographic procedures and clinical studies and uses these to inform treatment plans. Provide recommendations on a variety of analgesic options including ketamine infusions, lidocaine infusions, epidural and/or nerve catheters, opioid conversions, and transitions from PCA to PO analgesic regimen. Round on inpatients with indwelling epidural catheters and/or peripheral nerve catheters and adjust therapy as needed. Assist in the placement of epidurals, peripheral nerve blocks, and peripheral nerve catheters as needed. The provider must be familiar with non-pharma options for pain and symptom management. Perform routine, non-image-guided peripheral nerve blocks and trigger point injections. Interrogation and refill of intrathecal pain pumps in hospitalized patients undergoing surgery and advanced imaging studies.

Required Qualifications*
NP
Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
Current DEA registration required
ACLS certified
PA:
Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
Current DEA registration required
ACLS certified

Desired Qualifications*
1 Year of Inpatient APP experience is preferred, although new graduates are encouraged to apply
Experience with pain management services as an APP
Demonstrated familiarity with non-pharma options for pain and symptom management
Demonstrated expertise in facilitating the educational growth of others through previous clinical instructional roles.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as organizational abilities.

Appointment: 26 hours

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
