Summary

The Department of Otolaryngology is seeking a qualified APP to join the inpatient Oto Head & Neck service. In this position, the APP will evaluate, manage and implement orders for adult patients admitted with tracheostomy as well as manage complex care for inpatient adult Otolaryngology Head & Neck patients.

Responsibilities*

  • Manage and implement orders for adult patients admitted with tracheostomy and for the Otolaryngology Head & Neck service.

  • Ensure compliance with existing tracheostomy and difficult airway policies throughout the adult hospitals

  • Evaluation and orders for management relative to tracheostomy site care and associated pressure injuries.

  • Perform tracheostomy tube changes and diagnostic tracheoscopy

  • Facilitate pathway to decannulation and assist primary teams in navigating tracheostomy longitudinal care.

  • Ordering, interpretation, and management of appropriate imaging and lab studies.

  • Identification, ordering and monitoring of appropriate pharmacologic agents.

  • Providing and documenting care according to University of Michigan Health System standards including progress notes, discharge summaries and consults with associated billing codes where appropriate.

  • Patient education for tracheostomy care and Oto Head & Neck service.

  • Coordinating timely discharge process with patient and family education, solution generating for any barriers that arise, and communication with chief resident and/or supervising physician.

  • Evaluation of acute Otolaryngology post op patients.

  • Assist in minor procedures as directed by attending physician.

  • Coordination and discussion of patient care with consulting services.

Nursing Specific Info

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications (NP):

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and specialty certification as a NP in the State of Michigan

  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

  • Current DEA registration required

  • ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).

  • One (1) year of experience as a PA/NP

Required Qualifications (PA):

  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.

  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required

  • Current DEA registration required

  • ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).

  • One (1) year of experience as a PA/NP

Desired Qualifications*

  • One (1) year of demonstrated experience as a PA/NP with surgical patient care.

  • One (1) year of Otolaryngology experience as a PA/NP, inpatient experience is preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in evaluation and care of adult tracheostomy patients.

  • Experience with history and physical examinations, writing patient orders and progress notes, hospital rounds and consultations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies.

  • Experience performing independent minor procedures or assisting in the operating room.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, and as part of a collaborative team

Work Schedule

Hours/Week: 40 hours per week

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
