Job Summary:

DAPER and the Department of Athletic Training is seeking an Advanced Post-Graduate Athletic Trainer "APGAT". Reporting to the Director of Athletic Training, you will be working cohesively and collaboratively with coaches, researchers and world-renowned physicians to ensure the health and safety of student-athletes. You must be an effective communicator, passionate about wellness and scholar-athleticism, skilled in injury prevention, evaluation and treatment services for intercollegiate student-athletes, and an expert in maintaining exceptional student-athlete performance. You will also build international relationships and effectively impact staff. The APGAT position is a two-year non-renewable contract starting Summer 2024 and ending in Summer 2026.

APGAT Areas of Development:

  • To equip the APGAT with the administrative skills necessary to immediately assume a leadership position upon program completion.

  • To provide superior, hands on orthopedic sports medicine training from some of the most highly regarded clinicians in the United States.

  • To ensure advanced skill development through a committed approach to the finest, most recent medical practices in the field of sports medicine.

  • To optimize communication among a multidisciplinary healthcare model and thrive as part of a larger team atmosphere.

  • To facilitate participation in clinical research studies and testing protocols designed to prevent injuries, enhance athletic performance, and advance the field of sports medicine.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver a high-level of medical services including, but not limited to: prevention, assessment, referrals, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries for student-athletes.

  • Ensure emergency readiness at all sanctioned practices and events.

  • Maintain student-athlete compliance with team physician treatment guidelines.

  • Assure confidentiality of student-athlete medical records.

  • Provide effective written and oral communication between student-athletes, coaches, sports performance staff, administrators, as well as, the multidisciplinary medical team regarding the status and progress of student-athletes.

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all relevant parties.

  • Provide leadership in assigned administrative areas.

  • Travel, evening and weekend work is expected.

  • Collaborate with researchers involved with Stanford University.

  • Adhere to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to, DAPER, NCAA, Conference, and Stanford Hospital/Clinics policies.

  • Serve as a host athletic trainer during NCAA post-season event(s) annually.

  • Attend specific continuing education courses annually that will support ongoing clinical and professional development.

  • Collaborate with program managers, administrators, key stakeholders, and other departments at Stanford University.

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following qualifications:

  • Master's degree in athletic training or related field as a Certified Athletic Trainer

  • Prior experience working in Collegiate/University setting (GA & ELM immersion experience included)

  • Ability to work long hours with irregular schedules.

  • Ability to engage in physically demanding, manual tasks.

  • Experience interacting and communicating effectively with coaches and medical personnel.

Program Outcomes:

Clinical: The APGAT will be prepared to provide advanced sports medicine practices to participants in any setting.

  • Collaborate daily with members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team to develop the most comprehensive result-oriented treatment plan for the management of athletic injuries sustained by Stanford student-athletes.

  • Develop advanced clinical assessments of musculoskeletal injury resulting from sport and exercise.

  • Develop expertise in injury prevention procedures, screenings, and tests.

  • Develop proficiency in advanced manual therapy skills and other treatments.

Education: The APGAT will identify clinical interests to pursue continuing education and will commit to the mentorship and teaching of others.

  • Collaborate with other members of the AT staff to supervise, train, and direct athletic training students for affiliated CAATE accredited programs nationwide.

  • Attend sports medicine continuing education events.

  • Commit to finding education on leadership and soft skill enhancement.

  • Attend specific continuing education courses per year that will support ongoing clinical development.

Leadership: The APGAT will be prepared to assume job responsibilities consistent with a leadership position in sports medicine upon completion of 24-month contract.

  • Learn successful management strategies in areas related to personnel, finance, and policy development.

  • Learn key administrative skills such as critical analysis and strategic planning methods to ensure successful long-term service delivery.

  • Assist in projects involving facility management, strategy implementation, and policy/procedure revision in athletic training and other Stanford departments.

  • Learn communication strategies that foster cooperative relationships with external departments and enhance community support.

  • Develop leadership qualities and leadership opportunities.

Research Opportunity (optional): The APGAT will be prepared to replicate cutting-edge research in the field of injury prevention in combination with the Student-Athlete Research Oversight Committee (SaROC).

  • Become familiar with lab procedures and equipment used for conducting clinical research.

  • Learn parameters for clinical research study design and participate in ongoing clinical studies, data collection, and analysis.

  • Develop or contribute to the development of a manuscript ready for peer review.

This position is a 2-year fixed term position with full benefits.

The expected pay range for this position is $66,560 per annum.
