UPMC St. Margaret is hiring a casual Advanced Patient CareTechnician to support its Emergency Department at our Magnetdesignated Aspinwall, PA location.

Advanced Patient CareTechnicians also provide invaluable aid to nurses and doctors on the floor bycompleting important skilled tasks such as checking vital signs and glucoselevels, performing EKGs and blood draws, and much more.
6A is a 34 bed medical/surgical unit that provides care to adult and geriatric patients with a focus on pre and post-surgical patients. We provide care to a full range of general adult medical diagnoses but our primary specialties are general surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, ENT, GYN, urologic surgery, and plastic surgery. The nurse to patient ratio utilized in the delivery of care is 5-7:1, depending on the shift. Our unit goal is the integration of the UPMC Core Values into all care delivery and unit relationships (quality and safety; dignity and respect; caring and listening; responsibility and integrity; excellence and innovation).

Patient care staff in department work on a rotating schedule to ensure 24/7coverage. Availability for all shifts, including some weekends and holidays, isexpected.

Responsibilities:

  • Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to theappropriate department.

  • Establishes appropriate and effective communication withother departments.

  • Contributes to the universal unit activities including,but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing mealtrays and transporting patients.

  • Constructively receives feedback and direction.

  • Requests assistance in planning and prioritizingactivities as needed.

  • Participates in self-review as requested by the unitdirector.

  • Participates in project and committee work.

  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity,horizontal violence and impairment in the health professions.

  • Cares for patients and self by supporting safety in theworkplace.

  • Develops and maintains productive working relationshipsinternally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions,enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.

  • Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistantresponsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimencollections and Foley care) AND the employee has successfully completed

Basic arrhythmia class AND can perform at least four of the followinghospital identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foleycatheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter,IV catheter removal, femoral hemostasis, or IV insertion.

  • Provides patient care including assisting with patientprocedures and activities of daily living.

  • Assists with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonarytherapies. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reportschanges in patient status.

  • Suggests and supports changes within thedepartment.

  • Assumes responsibility for assignment and views problemsas challenges.

  • Demonstrates awareness of behavior on the efficientfunctioning of the department.

  • Supports department based projects and qualityinitiatives.

  • Provides instruction to patients and their familiesunder the direction of the RN. May apply, monitor and remove patientrestraints as per physician or hospital protocol.

  • Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures relativeto patient care and hospital related information.

  • Complies with safety policies and procedures includingstandard precautions. Documents in the medical record according toestablished procedures.

  • Performs assigned work in a timely and productivemanner.

  • Transports cardiac monitored patients within thehospital setting.

  • May insert foley catheters and perform straightcatheterization as instructed by RN.

  • May perform IV insertion, removal and dressingchange.

Completesdepartment clerical functions as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training,successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successfulcompletion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program.

  • Successful completion of basic information systemtraining.

  • Microcomputer experience preferred.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and inwriting.

  • Nursing Student that has completed one clinicalrotation preferred Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic orcurrently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

  • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course andannual competency required May in the course of their duties be in roomswhere medications are stored or may transport medications when theytransport patients.

  • Transportation of medication is limited from onedepartment to another.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both adidactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLSpreferred

  • Act 31 Clearance

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support

  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

  • Certified Pediatric Advanced Life Support
